The Longhorn Trolley is a tourist bus which runs about every 20 mins and travels through the three major districts of Fort Worth.
You can ride the trolley from the Fort Worth Zoo to the Stockyards with plenty of stops along the way. The trolley is inexpensive however nearly all of the museums and
attractions in Fort Worth give out free gold trolley tokens which will allow you free travel.

The Trolley runs from 11am to 6 pm between Sundance Square and the Cultural District and from 11 am to 11 pm between downtown and the Stockyards Historic District.

    DFW Airport...

The airport for the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex lies just 17.5 miles north of Downtown Fort Worth. There are four terminals at the airport.
Terminal A is for American/American Eagle flights.
Terminal B caters to America West, American, Continental, United, US Airways and most non-US airlines.
Terminal C is for American Airlines.
and Terminal E is for Aeromexico, AirTran, Delta and Northwest flights.
A Yellow Checker Shuttle known as the Airporter is located at Airporter Park & Ride lot (1000E. Weatherford St) in downtown Fort Worth and serves all the major Fort Worth hotels.
DART and Fort Worth's 'The T' offer train service to the airport from Dallas and Fort Worth via the Trinity Railway Express (TRE)

There is paid parking in lots along the street, but this parking lot was free.

    The sign says

    "Free Parking
    "While Patronizing

Since the tourist locations within Fort Worth are fairly spread out, you may consider using public transportation to save costs, especially in terms of parking. The public bus systems within Fort Worth are known as the "T".

Specific routes are available from Sundance Square to the Stockyards or the Cultural District, and there are special rates available for students and seniors.

Fares are $1.50 one way as of September 2008, and there are monthly and fixed number of rides discounts.

    Train pulling into the station

For a slightly off-beat way to get to Ft. Worth, you might take the train from Grapevine. Unfortunately, the steam engine was broken when we were there, so they were using diesel and the ambience isn't quite the same.

We didn't take the train because it would have gotten back too late for my daughter to pick up her son at school. Plus he really loves trains, so it wouldn't have been fair. We did see the train come into the station. The coaches are open-sided. They have other routes too including one to Trinity River.

The "Cotton Belt Route" is approximately 21 miles, linking the historic communities of Grapevine, Colleyville, Smithfield and Fort Worth's historic Stockyards. The Cotton Belt Route arrived in Grapevine in 1888. Grapevine's depot served the community until 1972 when it was officially closed by the company. Passenger service along this route was discontinued about 1930.

Fort Worth is not a very walkable city over all. There are distinct pockets around the city that lend themselves well to a good walk, but you will find that most of the time you will still need transportation between these locations. If you are going to enjoy Fort Worth on foot, I would recommend you stay in a hotel located on the Sundance Square area, or the Stockyards Historical District. You will then be able to walk that particular area, and take an inexpensive cab or public bus to the other. The third area that you can easily walk is the cultural district.

These lots require you to put money into the appropriate slot in the automatic attendant.

The website on the stockyards says:

" There are numerous options for parking in the Stockyards National Historic District and most are at Stockyards Station. There is a $3.00 parking fee in lots around the Station with one "Free" lot on the Northeast end of the property [which is where we parked]. Lunch crowds also enjoy "Free" parking from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday - Friday. Street parking along East Exchange Avenue is always "Free". Special Event parking throughout the Historic District is $5.00 with the parking closest to the Event being at Stockyards Station."

If you are arriving into Fort Worth by plane, the most convenient commercial airport is DFW. It is located about 15 miles from downtown Fort Worth, and about the same from the Stockyards Historical District. If you are flying on America's low cost carrier, Southwest, you will actually land at Dallas' Love Field, which is 40 miles away, so make sure you have adequate transportation to Fort Worth.

DFW is served by many major air carriers, but is the primary hub for American Airlines. On this particular trip, we stopped into DFW to pick up VT member Maria250 arriving from Amsterdam on KLM.

    Just a quick reference guide:
    Terminal A + C = American Airlines Domestic
Terminal B = American Eagle Regional Jets
Terminal D = All international flights and AA Domestic
Terminal E = All other carriers

    Getting around Ft. Worth

  • Our hotel was not well located for seeing the sights, most of what we did was in the Stockyards area and the Cultural district several miles away. Our hotel did have a free shuttle that we could have used on the weekends had Mark and Sarah not picked us up for dinner on Friday and VeronicaG and her husband not been kind enough to pick us up for sightseeing on Saturday. If you don't have a car, you will need to pick a more central hotel that has access to the T, Ft. Worth's bus system. The more central hotels I looked at all seemed a bit more expensive but perhaps that was because I was looking for a room for three.

    Getting from Dallas Love Field

  • I flew in from Chicago on Southwest Airlines which uses Dallas Love Field instead of the larger DFW International airport. Mark was kind enough to pick me up at the airport but if he had not been available there are a few shuttles, Super Shuttle which would have been about $50 for the 1st person, $10 more for additional people up to 7 from Dallas Love Field. Yellow Checker Shuttle was $45, didn't see any discount for multiple people.

If you fly into DFW International Airport, it's closer to Ft. Worth and cheaper for shuttle transport, $31 on Super Shuttle and $19 for Yellow Checker.
