Precaution Always Around Water!

  • Water Gardens - Fort Worth
    Water Gardens
    by Yaqui
On my last visit, I wanted to go over to the Water Gardens on 1600 Houston Street in down town Ft. Worth. It was disturbing to see so many flowers gracing a wall and I thought, "Oh no, someone must had been mugged and killed or something to that effect!" I was wrong! Four people drowned in these falls because they didn't realize how deep and that there is a huge pump that recycles the water continuously to make the water fall. One person fell in and didn't come up and then in continued like that with attempted rescue by three others who didn't make it. So please take in the fact when there is water, NEVER EVER ASSUME IT IS SHALLOW WATER OR PASSIVE WATER. See I live in California and the Kern River claims lives all the time, because someone always thinks the water is passive and slow and it isn't. Undertows are every where. So please be careful and keep an extra eye on the little one and big ones too!

  • Longhorns on Exchange Street - Fort Worth
    Longhorns on Exchange Street
    by grandmaR, 4 more photos
These steers have VERY long horns. They are most impressive when you see them attached to an animal who may or may not decide to use them. and while they are accustomed to doing this trip twice a day, every day (subject to weather), they are still not 'tame' animals.

Think about it. Longhorn steers weigh as much as a ton each and have horn spans up to 6 feet. In the picture it looks almost like one of the steers is scratching the butt of the one in front of him. How would that grab you?

The cattle are donated by breeders from throughout the state. To prepare the longhorns for what they might encounter during the daily outings, the drovers tried everything possible to irritate the one-ton beasts. They blared sirens, drove cars around them and pulled their tails. One steer, a red-and-white bovine named Bravo, passed every test but was pulled from the team the day he gored a horse

    Stay back on the curbs.

According to the website: "The Trail Boss has the ultimate decision on whether to drive the cattle or not. Longhorns are not pets or show animals, and drives are subject to their disposition."

The cowboy at the left is at the trailing end of the herd, most of which is out of sight on the right.

  • Overall, it it safe to move about Fort Worth with no worries. There are some areas to avoid, especially at night.

Stop 6, Eastwood, Polytehnic Heights, Worth Heights, Highland Hills and parts of Northside. Basically the area inside the loop fomed by I-20, I-30, I-35, and E. Loop 820. For the most part stay on the freeways when crossing town. When you travel thoroughfare streets, stay on the main streets. If you are on E. Rosedale, E. Lancaster, S. Beach, E. Berry, and Northside Dr. it is not advisable to venture onto the side streets. Do not walk down any of these streets at night, except Northside Dr in the immediate Stock Yards area. Also, avoid seedy looking motels, as many if not most are havens for prostitution and drugs.

Some streets change names and if the street goes east to west accross town, it will go through some rougher areas. Look at a map and find the community centers. Thomas Place, Meadowbrook, Southwest are in nicer areas.
Generally speaking the others are not and really there isn't much to see in the neighborhoods right around them for tourists.

If you find that you are in an area that makes you uneasy, trust your instincts. If you
feel that you are in an area that is nearly completely void of people of your race, and it looks like a seedy area, trust your instincts.

Use your head. If someone is harrassing you or throwing gang signs to you, just ignore them and keep going. In Northside and within the loop listed above, plus some areas west of I-35, south of downtown, there are gangs and there are people who will not appreciate your presence if you don't live there, or at least look like them.

Basically in Fort Worth, stay on the Main Path!

Now here's the cool part. Fort Worth has one of the safest and most beautiful downtown areas anywhere, including and even especially at night. There are things to do abound, and of course you want to book ahead to catch a production at the Bass Hall. The arts and cultural district is great and the stockyards are a blast! Don't miss our zoo!

Before you get too excited about taking your children to the Museum of Natural History and Science in Fort Worth, make sure you check and see if it has re-opened. Although some of the exhibits are currently on loan and sitting in the National Cowgirl Museum, it may be worth it for you to wait or spend time in Fort Worth somewhere else.

According to its website, the museum should be completed in Fall 2009!

    Eating Saddles

If you are around all this Western tack, sometimes the little ones want to join in the fun. After watching all the videos of the cowgirls riding their horses, Baby Anna wanted to get in the act. Her appetite was a bit larger than the mouth, and she wanted to eat the entire saddle instead of just riding on it. I believe this particular saddle was a little overdone, and tasted a bit leathery.

On my last visit there in Sept 2004, I was really disappointed when visiting the Mall… the place was just about a ghost mall. All that seemed to be left was Radio Shack, a Burger fast food place and Hallmark – which was closing down. What happened to all the other businesses? For whatever it was before, don’t even bother going there now. You will enjoy the downtown area a lot more or venture further out to the other shopping areas.

Ok, we all need to be reminded that in the older cities a lot of the streets are one way. Just wanted to remind everyone of this. Either you go the correct way and you will find yourself seeing very colorful hand gestures. Just be careful now!

When the Fort Worth Herd is trailing up through the Stockyards, make sure you stay on the curb otherwise you will have this lady to deal with. She will quickly direct you back to the pavement.

Please don't try to fish the Koi with the poles you see around the Japanese Gardens... they are for drowning purposes only :-)))
