Pioneer Memorial Library in Fredericksburg, Texas

The Pioneer Memorial Library is located in one of the town's nicest buildings. It was built as a courthouse in 1882 by San Antonio architect Alfred Giles, who has designed several of the spectacular houses of the King William District. You can go in to admire the building's architecture and comfortable reading room, and also for the free Internet access!

    Pioneer Memorial--Marketplatz

This unique looking circular structure sits at the Marketplatz towards the center of Main Street. Known as Pioneer Memorial, it replaced the original building once located here.

The Marketplatz is where farmers once brought their produce to sale. It was a hub for shopping and greeting one's neighbors in Fredericksburg's earlier years. This is still a pleasant gathering spot for townspeople and visitors alike.

Small garden spaces, shady retreats, a water wheel, numerous picnic shelters, a skating rink and memorials dedicated to Admiral Chester Nimitz* among others, can be found as you explore the area. Public restrooms are also located here.

*Fredericksburg is General Chester Nimitz's birthplace

We started our day in Fredericksburg on Saturday morning, where we walked into the town square. The area was already crowded with bands, music and the smells of breakfast.
There is a nice garden behind the Marketplatz which features statues of John Meusenbach the founder of Fredericksburg with Indians from the area. This gathering spot was set up to give plenty of room for people in the area to sell their food and visit with their neighbors.
It's still a lovely spot to visit.

There are a couple of nice statues in the park also. I really liked "Lasting Friendship" showing the meeting between John Meusebach and the Comanche. Please don't let your kids climb on the statues, though.

There are also statues and plaques about some of the distinguished citizens of Fredericksburg located in Market Square. The first one is of Otfrid von Meusebach a founder of Fredericksburg. Other citizens are: Jacob Brodbeck, teacher, surveyor and "father of U.S. Aviation; General Michael Hagee USMC; and former President Lyndon B. Johnson who was from the area.

The Fredericksburg Pioneer Memorial Library is located in the old Gillespie County Courthouse which was designed by famed architect Alfred Giles, completed in 1882, and was the 2nd courthouse for the county. It was used as a courthouse until 1939. This is a nice place to stop and get more info on the town and to use the WiFi to keep up with the latest on VT. It is next to the current Gillespie County Courthouse. Hours are 9 AM to 6 PM Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 9 AM to 7 PM Wednesday and 9 AM to 2 PM on Friday and Saturday. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Another interesting thing to see in Market Square is the Pioneer Garden which shows some plants native to the area, and is dedicated to the pioneers who established Fredericksburg.
