This was the earliest principal route of the Texas longhorn cattle drive which began going through this area around 1840. The cattle were driven from Austin through Waco and Dallas up north along the eastern edge of Oklahoma (as it is now) and up to Kansas City or to Sedalia, Missouri where there were railroad facilities for transporting the herd east especially to meatpackers at Chicago.
