DALLAS...big modern...

by dreamworld

DALLAS...big modern agglomeration, great if you like skyscrapers. I noticed the famous monument where JFK was killed years ago. And...nothing else. Actually I didn't stay enough time for that. One thing I can clearly remember are the traffic jams !!!AUSTIN...state capitol with of course, the State Capitol...here also lots of traffic. Apart the Capitol and the Governor's mansion, I can't say much.HOUSTON...like anyone going there, I visited the NASA complex...need lot of time to cover the whole area, but very interesting if you are into technology and science. Of course you can't get too close from the most interesting things, such as the shuttle. I would not recommend the beaches south of Houston (Galveston area) as they looked dirty and not very attractive to me. CORPUS CHRISTI area, this town is having a huge petrochemical complex north of the city, a real nightmare !!! Actually, it's...

Get out of the big cities and...

by richiecdisc

Get out of the big cities and head for the hills. Some excellent and relatively empty trails are just waiting for you. On my second trip I was travelling solo. Decided to climb Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas at 8,749 ft. Got to the campground very late in the day and all the camping spots were taken so tried to set up in a spot normally reserved for groups. The ground was as hard as a rock and after bending a few tent pegs, I decided to fix my tent fly with very large rocks that were laying around the campground. The next morning I was told I had to move so I carried the tent as it was, over to a new spot. It was beautiful out and wanted to get on the trail so just set the tent up with rocks as I had the night before. It was clear and very calm. It was morning . . . Headed up the trail and despite the heat, made great time. The views at the top were fantastic and not a soul...

by jake22

There is much to see in Texas and one should get out into the smaller towns to see the real people and their ways. I had had an engine failure on I-45 and was stopped on the side of the road looking under the hood like I knew what I was doing. A gentleman pulled up behind me and asked if he could help. I said that I would have to pull it to my home. He asked where I lived and it was about 5 miles off the road South of Dickinson. He said he was going that way and would take me home. When I got to the entrance of the subdivision where I lived, I told him I could walk from there, but he insisted on taking me to the door. I had many memories of kindness of the people of Texas.

Texas is truly an outdoorsman...

by LogieJoeBean

Texas is truly an outdoorsman paradise. There is everything here from fishing our beautiful lakes, to hunting in our deep, lush Pineywoods of East Texas to the rolling hills of Central and South Texas. If you love the water, have you hit the jackpot. Texas has hundreds of miles of beaches washed by the roaring waves of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as many state parks with hundreds of man-made lakes that are simply breathtaking. Almost every conceivable watersport imaginable is possible here in Texas. Texas is also home to some of the largest cities in the country. There is Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, just to mention a few. If you ever visit Texas, the Riverwalk in San Antonio is a must see, not to mention all of the fine eating establishments there. San Antonio is not alone in fine dining. Houston has plenty to offer along those lines. Houston is home of some of the best...

Keep your gas tank full

by BLSM

When traveling between cities in Texas make sure you know where the next place to get gas is. It takes 8 hours to drive from El Paso to Dallas and there is not a lot of places to stop. Not a lot to see either, unless you are looking for scrub trees and lots of tumbleweed. It also takes many hours to drive from Dallas to Galvaston.

Visit the capital in Austin! ...

by Basmom

Visit the capital in Austin! And of course, San Antonio. I think that San Antonio holds just about all the history of the real Old West Texas! There are a bunch of missions besides the most famous, The Alamo. There is a 'haunted hotel' - The Menger (right across from the Alamo) and tons of other stuff to see. My life is full of them - I have lived here all my life and memories are made everyday! :0)
