The County Seat Cafe

This past summer while returning from Austin, we drove through Georgetown long enough to have a bite to eat at The County Seat Cafe, a restaurant with homespun appeal. It sits across from the county courthouse on a corner of the historic town square.

We were promptly led to a table on the second level (pic #2) where we perched above the main dining room. A wooden railing stretched along this area from one end to the other, keeping us from feeling like we'd pitch right over the side. It was a great vantage point for people-watching and for exclaiming "Hey, doesn't that dessert look delicious?"

Jim and I both ordered grilled chicken caesar salads and ice tea. While we waited for our lunch to arrive we spied on the patrons below, unseen from our aerie. It was a little warm on this second floor, so in the summer you might want to request a table on the ground floor.

All in all, we thought the restaurant was a good choice for lunch when stopping in Georgetown. Perhaps we'll swing by for dinner sometime.

Veronica and Jim at Wildfire

Wildfire got its name for the use of flame and smoke in the preparations of their meals (pic #2). This restaurant offers a nice assortment of entrees ranging from filet mignon and chicken entrees to Australian lamb, ostrich and bison steaks.

Dee, our innkeeper at San Gabriel House, offered to call in our reservation for a 6:30 p.m. dinner. Upon entry we were treated like royalty and led to a high-back wooden booth situated along the wall.

I ordered an 8 oz. filet mignon ($30) which came with Southwestern Caesar Salad, Pecan Green Beans and Blue Cheese Mashed Potatoes. I was concerned that the S.W. Caesar dressing would be a bit too spicy for me, but our waitress brought out a sample to try with a crouton or two--it had a mild bite, but was very good!!

Jim ordered the Atlantic Salmon ($19) with the same accompaniments as above. We shared a warm apple pie with ice cream for dessert. We highly recommend planning a stop at Wildfire should you drive through or lodge in Georgetown for you will NOT be disappointed in your meal or the service.

Hours are Mon.-Sat. 11am-10pm; Sun. 10am-9pm

Memorable Desserts
1 more image

We were told that the Monument Cafe was quite a popular local eatery, so we dropped in before leaving Georgetown (pic #2).

It was a Sunday afternoon and although we had been urged to come by for the first meal of the day, we decided to stop by for dessert since we had been given a hearty B&B breakfast earlier.

There were several families standing in line to be seated. So that we didn't have to wait, we asked to be seated at the counter. Our first impression wasn't too favorable, as countless numbers of the waitstaff rushed by us without even offering a glass of water. However, after several minutes I spoke up and a waitress stopped long enough to bring us beverages.

Since we were eyeing dessert, I ordered a coconut cream pie and Jim chose a pecan pie with ice cream. Our bill came to $12.72 for the two pies, an ice-tea and diet drink. The pies were absolutely scrumptious and I asked if they were homemade--of course! A very talented baker named MAYA created them.

This day the LUNCH SPECIAL was: Beef Brisket with Beans and Coleslaw $8,25
This day the DINNER SPECIAL was: King Ranch Casserole with Rice, Beans and Guacamole $10.95

Here are other meal choices:
Spinach and Bacon Quiche $7.95
Tuna Salad with Stuffed Tomato and Fresh Fruit $8.50

Hours are Sun.-Thurs. 7am-9pm; Fri.-Sat. 7am-10pm

THE YOGOBOWL IN GEORGETOWN, TEXAS

This is a really interesting and fun concept that is sure to catch on and spread, in my humble opinion.

There are about six yogurt dispensers (see my photos) and each one has your choice of two flavors, or you can mix those two in your bowl. Then you move to the toppings area and put your own toppings on.

Finally, you simply weigh your bowl and pay at the rate of 39 cents per ounce!

Favorite Dish: obviously, yogurt. With many tasty toppings of course.

Authentic small town cafe with amazing food

The Monument is an authentic small town cafe that makes all its menu items in-house using local, seasonal, and mainly organic ingredients. The cafe is the THE community gathering spot in Georgetown - lots of families, businesspeople, courthouse regulars, and local politicos hang out there. The breakfasts and desserts are amazing, and the daily lunch and dinner blue plate specials are always wrth checking out.

Favorite Dish: The Monument Chocolate Pie, the pancakes, the daily special fried pies
