Another great place for seeing free live music is Herman Park and the Miller Outdoor Theatre. I remember coming here and watching some good acts play. Tons of people turn out makes for excellent people watching.
Emo's. There is one in Austin too, and they both rock.
If you want loud, live music, this is THE place for it. It's a total dive and the drinks suck, but you can see local as well as national bands for next to nothing. You must like loud and heavy music to enjoy this place. For christsake the MELVINS have played there.
Dress Code:
VERY casual.
Houston has way too many clubs to have one favorite.
If you know what you like, as far as clubs go, you'll find something here you'll like.
Like I said before, there can't be just one. We've got everything from dance to r&b, country to jazz, oldies to the 70's & 80's. We've even got what we call our own Tejano clubs. For those who like Tejano/country music and dancing.
Dress Code:
Most every club has its own dresss code. It's usually nice shirt, slacks or jeans, and NO SNEAKERS.
fitzgeralds or "fitz" as most regulars call it is a great place to see local and national talent screaming their heads off on stage, they regularly have a battle of the bands and if your into metal i highly recommend stopping by you will never know what you may find at fitz! it might be a little hard to find if you have never been its a old house at the corner of studewood and white oak across the street from the gas station. cover is never more than $10 and drinks are cheep aswell
Dress Code:
no dress code
Everyone should go to Taco Milagro!
Great live latin music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays
Great drinks (good Mojitos and Frozen margs)
Great food (try the chicken enchiladas)
Great atmosphere - sit inside, by the bar or outside by the fountains!
Thursday nights are the busiest. Dance floor gets so crowded you can barely move.
Dress Code:
Somewhat of a dress code. They'll kick you out if you wear your PJ's (I've seen it happen).
Jeans and a dress shirt are always a good idea.
They check ID's for under 21, but usually just put a heart or X on your hand (sometimes if you get there too late on Thursdays they wont let you in at all)
A hole in the wall bar, that is housed in some old house. The men's room is partly a converted shower. This is the first place that I take friend who come to visit from out of state. The clientel is mostly anglo, but the owners and staff are african-american and they love watching us whities dance. This place reminds me of the club from "Animal house" ... "you boys mind if we dance with yo dates?" if you've seen the movie.
Where else can you dance around like an idiot and drink $2 can beers.
Dress Code:
Gimme a break, dress however you want but mind you there are alway barchlorette parties there and it get pretty crazy sometimes!
Full of local young people with great service, moderately priced drinks and live music.
Dress Code:
Mainly a jeans and t-shirt kind of place. I wore a halter top and black pants and fit in just fine.
