Carrabba's by H-TownJourneyman The Carrabba's family immigrated to the United States from Sicily in the late 19th century, and settled here in southeast Texas. Years later, the family would begin to share some of the cuisine that their homeland is so noted for. The Carrabba's chain of restaurants has it's roots in the Houston area, although now it has locations all over the United States. The owners Johnny Carrabba and his uncle Damian Mandola have installed the slogan "not your average Italian" to thier restaurant. And on many occasions this is the case. But the big problem I have personally experienced at these establishments is a lack of consistency. On a good night, you can taste some of the best Sicilian food anywhere around. A great selection of appetizers such as calamari and bruschette bread, excellent salads and a wide variety of fresh pizzas such as the Margherita. The pastas and entrees like the eggplant parmesan can be stellar. And a decent wine list can bring out the flavor of the food. But several times I have dined here. the food can be way below par. Sometimes the seasonings and/or spices seem to be totally different than before, giving the food a completely different taste. And the staff, while generally very friendly, tend to let service lag when it gets busy. So with Carrabba's, it can be a sort of a roll of the dice. Sad, because as stated, when they are on, they offer a great dining experience.

Doneraki by H-TownJourneyman Doneraki restaurants are a local chain here in Houston, and serve up some of the most delicious Tex-Mex food around. There menu is astounding with an incredible list of traditional Mexican favorites such as enchiladas, fajitas, and tacos, and some of their own twists like Chicken Valentina and Shrimp a la Veracruzana. The lunch menu is very reasonably priced, and they have a decent breakfast served as well. Having visited several locations on many occasions, I can say that the food is consistently fresh and tasty, and the restaurants are very clean and well maintained. And for dinner there is usually a mariachi band that walks around the place and performs for patrons. The only problem with Doneraki sometimes is their tendancy to hurry the service. It's not that it is bad service, the staff is very friendly and you never have to wait for a waiter/waitress to pass by to check on you. But they bring the food to you quick, take the plates away as soon as you are done, and bring the check to you when you are done eating. Someone dining here can feel a little rushed, as I have experienced before. But I would have to say that this shouldn't discourage someone from eating at Doneraki, as it is very good food, and the service and prices are not bad!

Pappasito's by H-TownJourneyman Pappasito's is the Tex-Mex representative for the Pappas Restaurants chain. You can get some mighty delicious food here, but it can be quite pricey compared to other Mexican restaurants around town. They have great appetizers, the ceviche and shrimp quesadillas are great to start off things. If you are craving a Margarita with your meal, they have a variety of diiferent kinds to choose from. The menu is very extensive: they have some traditional Tex-Mex items such as enchiladas, tacos, and fajitas. And some not so standard items like quail, but prepared with a "south of the border" twist! Usually the best, and most tasty thing to get is a "platillo combinado", or a combination platter. Pappasito's pretty much has any combination of items you could want on the menu already, but if you don't see what you want, you can substitute to make it just what you are craving. They also have a great lunch menu, with prices that are a little more reasonable. As I stated though, this is a wonderful place to dine for Mexican food, and I recommend it highly. But in Houston, where there is a Tex-Mex restaurant practically on every corner, this is by far not the cheapest place in town!
Beef & Chicken Fajitas al Carbon! Excellent flavor, and comes with a slew of sides like guacamole, sour cream, red beans, and pico de gallo.

Rouge is a recently opened restaurant in the Montrose area. As its name indicates, the decor is all in red (bordeaux). The service and food are excellent for the price. The presentations of the dishes are very original and nice, and the portions sizes very reasonable (not too big like in most American restaurants!). Can be a very romantic restaurant especially in the small room upstairs. The food is a cross between French (with a tinge of North African) and American. They change the menu regularly and experiment. Count $150 for 2 persons with wine.

by TexasDave This description should be under shopping and restaurants because it's in between both categories. They have all kinds of edibles: raw ingredients as well as ready-to -eat dishes. It's a great place to get food to bring back to the hotel room. There is a bakery section, cold-cuts and cheese area, and even a hot entree bar similar to a cafeteria. A neat experience even if you only go in and browse! by H-TownJourneyman Landry's Restaurants is a huge American corporation that owns and operates several different chains of restaurants across the United States. The company has it's beginnings here in Houston and surrounding areas, when in 1980 CEO Tilman Fertitta bought his first restaurant in Katy, a suburb just west of Houston. Being raised in Galveston along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, Fertitta initially focused the company mainly on seafood cuisine. But as the years went by and his business grew, he branched out into several different types of food. He opened up many different restaurants in and around Houston, including Landry's Seafood, Joe's Crab Shack, Willie G's, and Saltgrass Steakhouse just to name a few. Since then, the Landry's corp. has grown into one of the biggest companies in the country, now not only focusing on the restaurant buisness, but also the entertainment industry as well. Places like the Kemah Boardwalk, the Downtown Aquarium, and the Rainforest Cafe not only serve up food for patrons to eat, but also have entertaining and fun things to see and do at their respective locations. Many Landry's establishments can be a little over-the-top in trying to create an authentic atmosphere for whatever the style or type of cuisine a particular place specializes in. But generally speaking, most Landry's spots provide a good atmosphere, fresh food, and in many cases, good fun. I have my opinions about every place I have visited, both good and bad. But one thing is certain, Mr. Fertitta has a great company on his hands, and can be proud of the corporation that he has created. With locations now all over the United States, it is indeed a "restaurant empire"! :)

Arcodoro is an intimate restaurant with amazing Sardinian/Italian cuisine. The restaurant is divided into 2 areas; the grill area is a little informal and has bar and patio for both dining and drinking, the dining room has a romantic formal atmosphere where meals can be enjoyed in peace and quiet. Whether you are interested in partaking of the menu while people watching or would simply like to have an excellent meal in an intimate setting Arcodoro can't be beat.

La Mora by krackhorre La Mora is my absolute favorite Italian restaurant in the greater Houston area. I was 14 years old when they opened and have been a loyal customer ever since. The atmosphere in the front room is very warm and romantic and is very remenicent of a Tuscan cottage. The main dining room is a site to behold with a vaulted ceiling and outer walls lined with columns. The wait staff are very friendly and accomodating without being overbearing. Most of their food is incredible, I can safely say that I have tried at least 80% of the menu at La Mora and have never been disappointed.

Sabai Thai Cafe by H-TownJourneyman This tiny Thai restaurant within Chinatown of southwest Houston serves up some mighty scrumptious food, and for a great price! The place is very clean, and has a quaint atmosphere with lovely aquariums on the walls with beautiful tropical fish. The menu has an excellent variety of traditional Thai cuisine, the spring rolls, fried dumplings or one the many soups here make great appetizers. Entrees include an assortment of fish, pork, and chicken dishes. The drunken noodles, satay chcken, & roasted pork leg are wonderful. The sweet sticky rice is a good dessert to finish off the meal. And with cheap imported & domestic beers, an inexpensive lunch menu, and an extremely friendly staff, Sabai is a great choice to enjoy some Thai food here in town.

Tubtim Siam by H-TownJourneyman This Northwest side restaurant is the only place on this side of town, and one of the better ones in Houston, to get truly authentic Thai food! Fairly small, but very quaint, the staff, even when busy, is extremely nice and their service is top notch. The menu has a wide selection of Thai items, as well as a few Chinese dishes as well. All the food here is prepared fresh, and has such a great flavor to it. Appetizers such as spring rolls and fish cakes are really good. And the many entrees consisting of meats such as beef, chicken, and duck are incredibly delicious! They seem to use the perfect amount of curry in their meals, not overpowering, but enough to bring out the zest of the food. Prices are very reasonable for a Thai restaurant, especially one that has this quality of food! Anyone who enjoys Thai food will enjoy their experience here!
