    Fair on the Square

Usually held the first weekend in October, the Fair on the Square is an arts, crafts, and trade festival held on the block surrounding the Walker County courthouse in downtown Huntsville, and some adjacent streets including Rather Park.

Vendors sell all kinds of things from furniture, antiques and art, to various Texan food dishes.

Even in a fairly decent sized town like Huntsville, the Texas habit of relaxing has long been evident. There are several historical markers in front on corner businesses around the courthouse square talking about hoe Sam Houston, when he was not busy making history, liked nothing better than to sit in a chair in front of the businesses and carve hearts, swords and other thing out of a stick of wood. He frequently presented these items to the children of friends and people passing by and loved to tell stories to interested listeners. That mentality is still evident today, as I have found a number of Texans who enjoy telling about the history of the state and their ancestors in a relaxed manner.
