I've only flown into DFW twice that I remember. Once in 1997 when I picked up a rental car, and once in 2004 when I visited our daughter in Frisco at which time she picked us up. Dallas Fort Worth airport is a very big airport and it is said to be the 3rd busiest in the US. It covers more than 29.8 square miles; real property consists of 18,076 acres (7,318 hectares) which is the 2nd largest airport land mass in the US.. It is a hub for American Airlines. It is in what they call the Metroplex which consists of 126 communities in addition to Dallas and Fort Worth. The Airport is operated and managed by the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Board. The Board is comprised of seven members from the City of Dallas, four from the City of Fort Worth, and one non-voting position occupied by - on an annual, rotating basis - each of the Airport?s neighboring cities of Irving, Grapevine, Euless and Coppell. Most people that fly into DFW aren't really coming to Irving. Leave a Comment

We drove to Irving by a somewhat circuitous route from Frisco. But the DART buses do come here. The website says: Have your fare ready. Exact cash or change or a DART pass are acceptable fares. The base fare for most local trips is $1.25. Fareboxes accept $1 bills and/or coins, including $1 coins. Day Passes are available on all buses and from ticket vending machines at rail stations. Passengers making transfers to a second bus or rail route will be required to pay a second fare or purchase a Day Pass (your best value-$2.50 Local, $4.50 Premium and $1.00 Reduced). These Day Passes will be good for unlimited rides (including your return trip) until 3 a.m., and eliminate the need for transfer slips. . About one block from your stop, press one of the yellow plastic strips (next to the windows on most buses) or the red buttons (above passenger seats in other buses). This signals the operator that you want to get off at the next stop. Leave a Comment

The old ship (a reconstruction of one of Columbus's boats) provided quite a contrast with the monorail. I understand this monorail is called a People mover and is a mile long. It went right up into the hotel in the same way that the monorails go to some of the Disney hotels at Disney World A 2003 report says: "Las Colinas People mover is another urban people mover built in the early 1970?. The cost of Phase I is reported to be $45 million, which included 5 years of operation and maintenance by the vendor (Lynch, 1989). The APM is maintained and operated by the Dallas County Utility and Reclamation District, a governmental body, which is responsible for much of the Las Colinas infrastructure. Beginning in 1986, the people mover was equipped with four cars and power and control infrastructure by AEG-Westinghouse. Ridership was low and financial problems became so severe that the system shut down completely from July 1993 to December 1996. Since its re-opening, the APT has operated only from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm on weekdays, with two cars, one for each route. Operation is completely manual, with cars running on demand. Only one of the stations (Bell Tower) is generally accessible to the public. The other three are inside private office buildings. Most of the traffic consists of employees traveling to and from the Bell Tower for lunch." On my initial visit in 1997, I did not get to ride this APM. So when I got down to Irving in 2006, we walked to the Bell Tower after lunch and went up in the elevator. There is a sign that says Push Button Below for Service, and when you push it a red light flashes, and a voice comes out of the loudspeaker to say how soon the car will be there. The electricity was off at the building at one end of the line, so we could only go partway there, but I did ride all of the Blue Line and see the area from inside the cars except for that part, and on the Red Line, I get to go into the old Mandelay Hotel. by keeweechic The service was closed for a few years due to lack of patronage but was reopened again in 1996. It was designed to pass through the retail area which includes the canal area. The guideway runs along the top of the buildings and is hardly visible in most parts. The service is only operated only from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm on weekdays, with two cars, one for each route. Fares are free Leave a Comment Theme: Train

by keeweechic During 1979 and 1983, the first 1.5 miles of the elevated guideway was built. In 1989 four cars were running over two routes and serving four stations. A future plan was to have a total of 5 miles of dual lane guideway and a 20 stations but this was never completed. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

This striking sculpture known as The Mustangs was placed on Williams Square in 1984. The horses gallop across the plaza on a granite stream, manes streaming behind them, wild and free! We've taken all of our out of state visitors to see this immense masterpiece! The beauty and strength of these animals is captured so realistically! The nine Mustangs of Las Colinas comprise the largest equestrian sculpture in the world. African wildlife artist, Robert Glen created them from bronze in recognition of the free spirit exemplified in the heritage of Texas. by VeronicaG Las Colinas' pretty floral clock welcomes you to this master planned community. You'll pass it when traveling O'Connor Boulevard. It reminds me a similar display we viewed in Valparaiso,Chile. This timely creation located on the corner of a well-traveled boulevard is very inviting, but there is no easy place to pull off to examine it more closely! Seasonal flowers encircle the clock and scatter colorfully beneath it, while hedges spell out the name of Las Colinas. Address: Can be seen from O'Connor Boulevard

The Mandalay Canal is such a charming part of Las Colinas. Old World style gives these office buildings, restaurants and shops a uniqueness from its modern counterparts on the street above. We followed the walkway as waterfowl swam in the winding canal and the sun created interesting patterns along the tree-lined path. It was peaceful and stirring--the perfect gathering spot for those wanting to take a break from workday stress! Address: Las Colinas, TexasDirections: in the downtown area

I saw these sculptures on my city tour of Dallas, and thought they were marvelous. So much so that I've been trying to get back to show them to my daughter ever since. We couldn't get back when we visited in 2004, but we made it this time. Unfortunately it was just my husband and me, and he wasn't too enthusiastic. But I did take some more pictures to go with the one film picture from 1997. The web address has other people' s pictures of the sculpture which are for sale. I think some of mine in the travelogues are just as good if not better. In this fountain, the sculpture group, not the water, is the focus. The eight 1.5 scale horses, cast in bronze have water activated around the horses' hooves to imply splashing. The horses appear to be running through a river. It is the largest horse sculpture in the world. They keep calling it an equestrian statue, but equestrians are the RIDERS and these horses are riderless. The buildings around the square rise to 358 feet (26 floors) on the north and to 217 feet (14 floors) on the east and west sides, the south side being open to O'Connor Boulevard. The sculpture is substantial, but the scale of the surrounding structures means it does not over-dominate the space. Inside one of the office buildings is a free Museum about the exhibit (mostly about Robert Glen the sculptor). The Mustangs were commissioned in 1976 and installed in 1984. The museum has a short film narrated by Lee Ann Rimes about the process of making the sculptures and the 20 year anniversary. Apparently, there are no more pure mustangs in America - these horses are modeled after those that a group of monks that has kept as a pure mustang bloodline near the town where Columbus set sail. Most likely they are of the same stock that seeded the mustangs in the Americas. The whole project took about 7 years with the sculpting itself taking 3 years. Leave a Comment
