I didn't get to take advantage of the FREE Mustang Museum Exhibit, open Wednesdays - Saturdays, from 11-5, in the West Tower of Williams Square on my first visit because I didn't have time. This time we did.

The museum is in Suite 105. There is a touch screen at the information desk in the lobby which will tell you where it is if there isn't someone at the desk.

"The Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum is located in the West Tower of Williams Square. Inside you will see a pictorial history of how the artist Robert Glenn created these masterpieces. Other sculptures created by Glenn are on exhibit inside the Museum. This history is not only entertaining but also very informative to all visitor no matter what age."

Inside the museum, there is also a short video presentation narrated by Lee Ann Rimes about the creation of the statues. This is a brief 20-minute presentation that shows how the detail in the statues, down to the veins in the horse's necks, was achieved and how the statues were shipped and put in place.

Admission to the museum is free and there is also a gift shop.

Los Colinas is a planned community in Irving. The Carpenter family owned the land and did the planning.

During WW II, Ben Carpenter was in the in the 124th Cavalry Regiment. Their mission was to free the Burmese people from the Japanese occupation force. In planning the first hotel for Las Colinas, he named the hotel ?Mandalay? to satisfy his desire for a historical placement with his personal life experience. The furnishings and accessories relate to the history of the Mandalay with Far Eastern influences.

Gondolas were imported from Italy, and the lakes and canals they plied added an Old World touch but also helped control flooding. There was a downturn in the 80s, and the shops along the canal closed, but apparently you can again get a gondola ride.

There is an annual Canalfest celebration each June, which offers music, arts, crafts and a variety of entertainment.

The day that we visited in 1997 was somewhat overcast. I managed only one picture of the Canal on our tour of Dallas and that has my thumb in it - we didn't get out of the bus except to see the Mustang sculpture. I did better on my 2006 visit.
