This house belonged to the Gilbert family. Franklin Gilbert was a second generation pioneer doctor. Both he and his pioneer nurse wife Dorothy were involved in nearly all important events in the Irving area. Most of the time Gilbert was practising, he was the only doctor in the town. There was no local hospital. He earlier career was as an English teacher and as a physician he served on the Irving School Board for 10 years, the local elementary school was named for him. Gilberts was also mayor of Irving for 5 years.
The house was restored in 1977 by Franklin Gilberts son and is now furnished with the original items from his childhood and the early days of Irving.
The railroad town of Irving was founded by two railroad engineers in 1903. A lot of the early character is very much present in the downtown area. Heritage Park shows much of those railroad times with the depot and the caboose.
Heritage Park is located in the heart of the heritage district in Irving. The park contains a number of historic relics. The Gazebo is a replica of an early gazebo in Heritage Park. Each Friday in October and May, lunchtime concerts are held here along with free drinks and desserts. The concerts run from noon to 1.30pm.
The Birdville Trail dates back to 1847. Travellers from Dallas would follow this trail via Cedar Springs and Breck and west on to Birdville (now Halthom City) and on to the gold fields of California. This trail was also used as a mail and stagecoach route.
There are 15 signs along the course of the Birdvill Trail in Irving to indentify this area. Along the route are historic sites such as Kit Cemetery, Kit Post Office, Main Street, Whistle Stop Plaza/Old Depot and the community of Bear Creek.
The watercourse runs diagonally across the plaza which is the length of two football fields. The terraced granite allows you to walk along the edge of the following and tumbling waters. At night time the waters and Mustangs are lit up.
There is quite an old European feel about the style of the buildings along the canal area, all mixed in with modern style office blocks and high rises.
The Heritage House was built in 1912 and is one of Irving's oldest homes. An early player piano has recently been donated to the house.
The house is located close to Heritage Park.
There are mahogany Venetian water taxis that cruise up and down the waterways and Lake Carolyn. Tradition dictates that couples kiss under every bridge.
During the year the Mandalay Canal is the site of many events throughout the year. CanalFest is held each June.
Quaint little shops line the banks of the waterway along with restaurants. The paths are all cobblestoned.
Just across from the Mustangs in Williams Square is the Mustang Sculpture Exhibit which includes explanatory video about its formation.
