    St. Peter's Historic Area

by quefregados Written May 19, 2003

Just walking around the downtown area between San Agustin Plaza west to the Union Pacific Railroad station, you see much of old historic Laredo. I took a tour (through the university's career center) of the Union Pacific station which was once a passenger train stop & you can still see the old hotel signs across the street & the sign that announces your arrival to Laredo from the Mexican side. Some of the old homes have historical markers & the stories of the families that shaped Laredo. These names are still commonly heard and people can trace back their roots to some of the powerful immigrants that built the homes in varying architectural styles (based on their home country). It's a beautiful peaceful walk but watch out for some of the rougher blocks - look for the large homes on Matamoros, Houston, Victoria Streets.
