all over town: Shopping Malls!
The reason for this town's existence is shopping. Specifically, shopping by Mexicans who cross the border to buy things in the US. I am not familiar with the situation on the Mexican side, but either the prices or selection or both is much better in McAllen.
I am the last person to recommend going to shopping malls while on a tourist trip, but here it is different. In fact, it makes for interesting people watching. For instance, seeing jewelry-laden upper class Mexican housewives strolling through the local Wal-Mart like it's some sort of a Neiman-Marcus is - shall I say - different. Stores here make incredible business. In fact, the small local JC Penney is by far the best selling store in the US.
La Plaza Mall
This is the town big mall... As in any USA city, you will find stores as The Gap (baby, kids, woman and man), Abercrombie and Fitch, Banana Republic, Bebe, Guess, Victorias Secret (:)) Express, Lane Bryant, Lerner New York, Bath and body Works, KB toys, shoe, sports stores, etc etc etc and the big ones such as Foleys,Sears, Dillars, JoeBrand and JcPenney...
Theres also a fast food, and well... You know... It's a shopping mall like any other...
- Family Travel
Along 10th street and to the north, you'll find lots of retail centers... With shops, restaurants, beauty salons etc...
Just in front of the mall, theres a Toys R'Us, Big Kmart, and an Old Navy.
Then theres the HEB (food store), Walmart, Target (department stores), Best buy, Circuit City (Electronic stores), Ross and Marshalls (outlets) and many more...
Theres also a Barnes and Noble book store.
flea markets: La Pulga
They're everywhere! Antique-hunters will find them disappointing, but if you're looking for bootlegs and weird curiosities, they're the place to go.
