  • Historic District

In addition to Archer Park there are several places on a list of historic sites in McAllen worth seeing. These include: The Sacred Heart Catholic Church, which was an offshoot of La Lomita Chapel in Mission (302 S. 15th Street); the El Rey Theater a nice Art-Deco theater built in 1948 (311 S. 17th Street); Casa de Palmas which was built in 1918...

  • 17th Street/Main Street

Two of the historic districts that are of interest in McAllen are the "Entertainment District" which is along 17th Street and is where some of the best bars and theaters are located; and the "Art District" which is along Main Street. In the art district you will find the "First Friday Art Walk" on the first Friday of the month and occasional free...

  • Veterans' Park

Near the convention center is one of the most impressive veterans memorials I have seen, a 5 acre park centered around a 105 foot black granite spire. There are "guardian walls" surrounding the spire dedicated to veterans from every war from the Revolutionary War to the present. Some of the walls highlight area veterans that paid the ultimate price...

McAllen Restaurants

  • Great Seafood Chain Restaurant

$16 as of May 2014 I love seafood and you pretty much know what to expect at a Red Lobster and this one was fairly typical. The food was very good and my waitress was better than average. The hostess was one of the cutest girls I saw on this trip. Everything! Especially the biscuits and seafood!

  • Best late night grub!

24 hours a day, full menu, delicious grub! Sirlon taco, because it is better meat than the more popular fajitas at the same price. They give you enough meat on one taco to easily make two. The salad/condiment bar full of fixings for the taco will allow you to really strech your taco. You get free chips and salsa so 1 taco is usually enough. If I...

McAllen Nightlife

  • Cheap, fun, and safe.

The downtown portion of McAllen has a strip with plenty of bars that range from high end nightclubs, to sports bars. You can find something for you, if not just ask around like my wife and I did. The locals where more than helpful. A nice pair of jeans and a collered shirt will treat you well for the city.

  • Get gas in Corpus!

If you are traveling south from Corpus, be sure to get gas there. Shortly after Corpus, a long stretch of desert begins: there are no gas stations until you get to the valley, no towns along the way, just ranches and barbed wire. If you run out of gas, you will have a hard time getting help.

  • Shopping Malls!

The reason for this town's existence is shopping. Specifically, shopping by Mexicans who cross the border to buy things in the US. I am not familiar with the situation on the Mexican side, but either the prices or selection or both is much better in McAllen.I am the last person to recommend going to shopping malls while on a tourist trip, but here...

  • Don't park under palm trees.

They shed.Oh, you're laughing now, but you won't think it's so funny when a palm frond dents the hood of your car!Okay, so I laughed. But my car was a piece of junk. One of my friends got conked on the head by falling fronds. That was also pretty hilarious. But seriously, don't park under the palm trees.
