Calm and Quite city...
My switcases are too little...
I love it here!
There is always an event going on in the city that you can check out for next to zero dollars. The wife and I are going to the Garden of Eatin tour today at the Quinta Mazatlan which is a tour that shows what plants are edible and have midicinal properties in the area. Just follow the McAllen CVB facebook at http://www.facebook.com/mcallencvb they...more

Good for: Couples
24 hours a day, full menu, delicious grub! Sirlon taco, because it is better meat than the more popular fajitas at the same price. They give you enough meat on one taco to easily make two. The salad/condiment bar full of fixings for the taco will allow you to really strech your taco. You get free chips and salsa so 1 taco is usually enough. If I...more
Breakfast tacos to die for! This is a pickup store only, but they cook to order with generous portions. One of the few places where you can litteraly put anything into a giant breakfast taco. They are fresh and delicious, built to order. If you try them you will be a regular customer. Breakfast taco with Chorizo, Egg, Bacon, Jalapenos, Onions,...more
Small Bistro, intiment atmosphere, great chef and pastry chef, great wine list, phenomal food. The Class of the McAllen dining scene. I highly recommend going with a group and having everyone order something different because it is all good. Best first date or anniversary restuarant in the Valley. I believe they offer a $75 multicourse special on...more
Hoptung is run by a vietnamese family and the food tastes like it is run by someones grandma! WARNING - service here has been known to be very slow and unaccomadating at times. I have friends who refuse to return due to poor service. I think the food is worth the hassle. The Pho (vietnamese soup) cant be beat and is the reason to come. I almost...more
Overall a nice asian themed restaurant, clean and resonable priced. Salt and Pepper Dunguness Crab! These crabs are stored live along with lobsters in an in store aquarium and is prepared fresh. I grew up on the gulf coast and the difference in taste between fresh and frozen is worth the price. This dish is expensive at $36 but could easily feed...more
I visit the McAllen area several times a year (next time for Christmas-hopefully no snow this time as in 2004) and El Pato is a must first stop on the way from the airport. Incredible Tex-Mex fast food. I dream about the chicken and avocado corn tortilla patos w/fresh pico de gallo! Yum! Freshly made corn tortillas with chicken. sliced avocado and...more
The downtown portion of McAllen has a strip with plenty of bars that range from high end nightclubs, to sports bars. You can find something for you, if not just ask around like my wife and I did. The locals where more than helpful. A nice pair of jeans and a collered shirt will treat you well for the city.more

If you are traveling south from Corpus, be sure to get gas there. Shortly after Corpus, a long stretch of desert begins: there are no gas stations until you get to the valley, no towns along the way, just ranches and barbed wire. If you run out of gas, you will have a hard time getting help.more

The reason for this town's existence is shopping. Specifically, shopping by Mexicans who cross the border to buy things in the US. I am not familiar with the situation on the Mexican side, but either the prices or selection or both is much better in McAllen.I am the last person to recommend going to shopping malls while on a tourist trip, but here...more

They shed.Oh, you're laughing now, but you won't think it's so funny when a palm frond dents the hood of your car!Okay, so I laughed. But my car was a piece of junk. One of my friends got conked on the head by falling fronds. That was also pretty hilarious. But seriously, don't park under the palm trees.more
be careful what you bring accross the border. what may seem like trivial items to you, could be illegal to cross. (i accidentally brought some cuban cigars accross the border one time, and i sure felt guilty) also, you have to pay a duty tax on any liqour or cigarettes that you buy in mexico. the customs will place a tax stamp on those items as...more

gives great homilies, and is hilarious to boot. Once he informed the congregation that we were "too stupid to go to Hell."
Favorite thing: What disturbs me is that after living in the Valley for two years, I stopped noticing this billboard. It became a normal part of the landscape.
