McKinney has preserved a number of structures which comprise historic Chestnut Square Village. Taking your family on a guided tour would make for an interesting history lesson! A turn of the century chapel, a lodging place once know as the "Two Bit" Taylor Inn (1864), a former grocery store (1918), schoolhouse (first free school in Collin County) and several residences spanning 1854-1918 are available for tours on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays at 11 am. Please see additional pictures of: The Old Chapel (pic #2) The First Free School House (pic #3) The Dulaney House (pic #4) The Dulaney Cottage (pic #5) Annual events such as Champagne & Chocolate--a benefit concert/auction and the Holiday Tour of Homes are held to fund the historic district. Heritage Guild of Collin County oversees Chestnut Square. Admission for adults is $5; children $3. A family rate is available. This historic outdoor museum is not opened on Sunday. Hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 11 am.

The Heard-Craig House is a restored historic home built in 1900 that is located very close to the Old Town Square in McKinney. During the time after it was built, it was the home to business, art and literature for this part of Collin County. The Heard family made its living as the Mercantile dealers in the area, and invested its profits in many other businesses in and around McKinney during that time. Stephen Heard, who built the residence married Lillie and had a daughter Katie, who then married Thomas Craig, who eventually owned the house after Stephen passed away. As Katie grew, she wanted to ensure this house would always be a place where women in particular could come and meet to learn about the past. Even past her death in 1970, the house has stood as a place for education, and has a social membership club associated to it through this day. Near the town square, but off by a block or so Lone Star Wine Cellars offers a tasting room designed to blend nicely into the historic buildings and friendly atmosphere of McKinney. They feature four tastings for $7.50. Once inside, a small tasting room welcomes you to Lone Star, which is located within a small indoor mall featuring other shops, as well. Presently they offer wine classes two times a month, but they may be changing this to a quarterly event instead. The red wine class and the white wine class are both $35.00. A special food and wine pairing class costs $50.00. Two main activities: A Spring tasting and Harvest Festival are held each year. On the second Saturday of each month, local artists display their work. Lone Star has a second location at 201 E. Franklin Street in Grapevine, Texas (817-310-6388). Address: 103 E. Virginia St., McKinney, Tx.Phone: 972-547-9463

theatre by btex At Cinemark Movies 14, you'll find first run movies at reasonable prices. Matinees are $2.50 and it's $4.50 at night. $2.50 is nothin'...and most movies that they put out aren't worth diddly...so $2.50 is a great deal. It's one of those modern megaplex theatres that has about 4,000 screens...actually, I guess there are 14...that's why 14 is in the name. They try to make up for the cheap tickets by getting people to buy $4 cokes and jumbo popcorn tubs...but, if you can resist those temptations, this is a good place to catch the latest flicks. Some of the movies that I've seen here recently are: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kill Bill, and The Last Samurai. Leave a Comment

Chestnut Square by btex Chestnut Square is a collection of seven houses and other structures dating back to the 1850s. The buildings are the Taylor House, Dulaney Cottage, Johnson House, the Chapel, Dixie's Store, the Faires House and Schoolroom - (I'll try to put pictures of them each in a travelogues sometime.) The buildings are furnished as they would have been in the 1800's and early 1900's. Tours begin at the visitors center on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11a.m. Leave a Comment Address: 315 South Chestnut StreetPhone: 972-562-8790Directions: near downtown McKinney; next to the new courthouse buildingWebsite: http://www.chestnutsquare.org/

heard-craig house by btex The Heard-Craig house was built in 1900. The original owners wished for it to be preserved to show future generations how people lived in yesteryear. Tours now take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 p.m. and on Saturdays at 1,2, and 3 p.m. The Heards also left land to the Heard Museum near McKinney...very gracious of them. Leave a Comment

old courthouse by btex The Old Collin County Courthouse is smack dab in the middle of downtown McKinney. This version was finished in 1876 - the courthouse that stood on the same spot before had been made of pine logs. Unfortunately, the building is now closed to the public - which means no tours. But, there's talk of renovating the interior - sooner or later the place will probably become a museum of some sort. courhouse and McKinney history: http://www24.brinkster.com/mckinneymall/mckinney_info/mckinney_history.htm Leave a Comment Directions: downtown McKinney

by btex Towne Lake Park doesn't measure up to Central Park or Stanley Park, but it's still a nice place for jogging, walking, fishing, picnics, paddle boating, etc.... There are also horseshoe throwing pits, volleyball courts, and softball fields nearby. Paddle boats can be rented at a concession stand. Lots of geese make the park their home...they hang-out along certain sections of the walking path that surrounds the pond...be sure not to tick them off...those geese will chase ya. Garret Art Gallery by VeronicaG We were happily surprised at the high quality of local art on display at McKinney's Garret Art Gallery. Most of the pieces featured scenes from the Southwest; a number highlighted Texas' colorful state flower--the bluebonnet. Garret Art Gallery is run by a few good friends who are connected with the art community. Several of the paintings have been executed by these individuals. The gallery participates in an ARTWALK, held on the second Saturday of each month from 7pm-10pm.

by keeweechic Built in the early 1870’s this ‘Folk Victorian’ style house was originally owned by John H. Johnson who served as a Captain in the Confederate Army and authored the Texas Homestead Law. He was also quite a heated political character who had a distinguished career in the Texas Legislature and Senate. Descendants of John Johnson continuously owned the house until the Heritage Guild acquired the home for restoration in 1987. Leave a Comment
