New Ulm is a tiny town of about 1600 (More than doubled since 2000) located at the intersection of Farm to Market Highways 109 and 1094 in Austin County in the Prairies and Lakes Section of Southeast Texas. A guy and his wife I talked to at the Austin County Jail Museum said they really liked this town and it was not too far out of the way so I decided to check it out. I liked the simple beauty of this church but did not see much else here. The town was established in 1841 as “Duff’s Settlement”. During the next decade many German settlers came here from other nearby towns and in 1852 when the town applied for a post office, the town was renamed “New Ulm” in honor of the German town of “Ulm”. In the 1850s the town boasted three breweries.
