In the early stages of U.S. infancy, during a time when the United States relied heavily on the tutelage and protection of France, thousands of European adventurers – mainly those of German and Czech descent – as well as American romantics held a great deal of intrigue for the State of Texas: during this time frame the Lone Star State – as it is most commonly known as today – was often perceived as being nothing more than an enormous geographic enigma: it was because of this great mystery, in which the purest forms of “wildness” purveyed, that Texas became a fashionable destination for a wide assortment of writers, all of whom devoted their literary prose and expertise to the betterment of the Lone Star State.

Although my personal knowledge of Texas-oriented literature is rather limited, I have sifted, somewhat, through the pages of many works: “The Log of a Cowboy” being one in which I often return to – although the plot does not transpire completely in Texas. The novel is absolutely sensational, detailing the years following the American Civil War; it is highly regarded as being the finest and most dependable account of real cowboy life.

The protagonist of the novel, Andy Adams, a sixteen-year-old boy, leaves his home in the San Antonio Valley, in order to take up life as a cowboy on the range; following the western trail, from south Texas to Montana, Adams, through his travels along the American frontier, reveals a true depiction of a cowboy’s life and his work.

  • Keep lots of water handy. Sunscreen is not a bad item to have at hand also.

Keep a bug container in your car if you're in the mood for tarantula chasing ...

Did someone say packing...some 'Heat' eh? Doesn't this picture give you the warm fuzzies? Remember there is a reason why they advertise 'DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS'.

What kind of Texan would I be without my 44-Magnum strapped on my holster? I am working towards my carry license...I want my own gun first. Aside from going to the farm...Plano's Bullet Trap is my favorite place to go. This past year I rented the 'Desert Eagle' (a 50 caliber pistol)...and jeez I never imaged a kick like that! My first time to shoot was a 12 gauge shotgun with buck shots in the range...needless to say it was my first date with this particular guy and years later he admitted it was all a ploy so when that shotgun kicked..it kicked me into ...HIS ARMS! I still have my first target from that night...there were a couple of bull-eyes I am proud to boast about. (A few did get away from me...but it was probably the load mixture in the bullet.)

Feel free to call me Bonnie...

    Founding Father Factoid

During the debates at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Benjamin Franklin suggested that only the elite should serve as president of the United States and that they could do so without compensation.

  • Any type will do just make sure it's expandable...

Wear cool clothing, but bring a jacket and don't forget your dancing shoes! The weather in Texas changes real quick. We have an old saying in Texas 'If you don't like the weather stick around for 5 minutes, it'll change.'

You have to bring a camera! There are a great many things to take pictures of. Especially in the spring! There are more wildflowers and bluebonnets (the state flowr) than you can shake a stick at!

If you are goen to the coast, standard beachwear and a coverup for going into the restaurants and alot of sun block, the sun can be relentless.

Texas is a very large State and has many different climates. On the coast it is hot and humid; in the panhandle it is hot and windy; in West Texas it is hot and dry; in the.... OK, you got me. It's hot, all kinds of hot. It's a hot place dammit.

Pack for heat. Here I am on South Padre Island in the Winter. It looks hot, doesn't it?

  • Don't even try to take a cowboy hat with you ;) There's a lot of them on-site :)

Weather is sunny all year round, so you probably will not have a need in 400-type colour films.

  • Mosquito repellant is a must when traveling near the coast. Even in the winter. We were over run with mosquitos in Feburary near Galvaston.
