Pack for all weather

by taryn21

Even in the summer months (or the whole year for that matter) it is good to pack some long sleeved shirts and pants. Mornings and evenings are often quite a bit cooler. And in the first couple months of the year, there is often cooler, rainy weather where a jacket or fleece is needed. Shoes are good then too.

Sunscreen is NOT Enough!

by jcrosstx

If you are heading to the beach or plan to be outside anywhere in Texas during the summer time, sunscreen is not enough. If you are from a northern climate, even Baby Block 52 will not prevent a sunburn after a few hours on the beach. Be prepared and bring a hat, loose long sleeved shirt, and some cotton pants. Nothing ruins a vacation quicker than a bad sunburn. And yes - even the tops or bottoms of your feet can get burned. Also, even if it's cloudy, you can still get sunburned. And don't forget some heavy duty sunglasses!

Any type will do just make sure it's expandable... Wear cool clothing, but bring a jacket and don't forget your dancing shoes! The weather in Texas changes real quick. We have an old saying in Texas 'If you don't like the weather stick around for 5 minutes, it'll change.' You have to bring a camera! There are a great many things to take pictures of. Especially in the spring! There are more wildflowers and bluebonnets (the state flowr) than you can shake a stick at! If you are goen to the coast, standard beachwear and a coverup for going into the restaurants and alot of sun block, the sun can be relentless.

My existing bag from Thailand decided to disintegrate on the 1st night in Texas, so I ended up with a suitcase on wheels, which was excellent mobility wise (this is a driving road trip type holiday) but I would have been better off with 2 smaller ones, it got really heavy & had to be lifted into the back of the truck way too often!!! I was there in late Nov, the weather had been great for our trip so far but once we got to Texas, it got way too cold for this little Darwinite! First stop was for boots & then a decent jacket! All I had was extreme gear like a windstopper for hiking etc, not so great in a restaurant! My lonely planet advised to buy anything in this dept locally, but with the exchange rate I was getting, prices turned out to be astronomical! On the other hand I had no worries at all getting cheap 1 hour developing of all my film, even in a small town! Not in this...

Something waterproof. The weather here is very unpredicatable and you don't want your luggage soaking wet in an unexpected rain storm. If you are coming in the summer months which extend from May to September - bring light clothes. If you are coming in the winter, that is a bit harder to predict. Sometimes we have mild winters, sometimes they are very brutal. Just use your best judgement and keep checking with the Weather Channel! You can get whatever you need from any drug store unless it is prescription medicine...be prepared! This is all available locally. If you are going to any of the coastal areas...bring what you might need. Needless to say, these things are more expensive down there.

bring shorts if you travel in the summer it is very hot at times , tennis shoes they are more comfortable , bring dress clothes as some of the restaraunts do have dress codes, and you will want to look your best when you go out in the evening , if you don't have boots thats okay there are alot of places where you can buy a pair. everything in America runs on 110voltage , toiletries are everywhere so if you forget something you can always go to a supermarket and get what you need .

In warm months, dress in natural fibres so as to counter the at times unbearable humidity. Bring Chiggerrid if exploring the outdoors at all in warm months! If you thought mosquitoes were bad imagine microscopic bugs burrowing into your flesh. Joy. Texas in general, but particularly the Eastern part is an allergic timebomb to those with such tendencies. bring the appropriate medication that dries out your nose in warm months.

If you're going in Apirl, bring lots of shorts and some sandals. I recommend an umbrella. You can get film anywhere and they have lots of film developing places as well. Bring sunscreen and a hat for sure.

Bring clothing for WARM weather as it will be Hot, Hot, Hot in the summer months (which is about 9 months of the year). Also, bring jeans (Wranglers are the preferred brand), boots, a western belt and of course a cowboy (or cowgirl) hat. This is a picture of a hayfield in west Texas. This is farm country and the cotton fields can go on as far as the eye can see.

A BIG ONE!!!! and a back pack, tents and all to enjoy the out of doors. We ended up buying a suburban to haul everything in. Usually when we take the scouts camping we take both trucks...that way we won't forget anything! Wear clothes you can layer... you can put more on you can't take much more off than shorts and a tshirt. Always pack a rain jacket and remember that it might be 40 degrees in the morning but could be 98 by noon! The weather changes quickly and a thunder storm can spring up any time. Have plenty of pockets for sunscreen and hats and cameras SUNSCREEN! BUG SPRAY! Lots of deoderant since it's humid you sweat alot! Drink or have available plenty of water digital cameras with memory sticks are the best way to go. The wild life is abundant as are the breathtaking sights of just about anything!! Any of the State parks are worth a visit. Most have screened shelters but we...
