Pharr is a city of about 73,000 (up 57% since 2000) located at the intersection of US Highways 83 and 281 in Hidalgo County in the South Texas Plains section of Southern Texas. Pharr is part of the mass of humanity around McAllen and Edinburg. Although the area has long been inhabited, Pharr was established in 1909 as an agricultural center and was named after Henry N. Pharr a sugar planter from Louisiana. Pharr is the United States point of access to the major Mexican City of Reynosa.
