    Arbor Hills Nature Reserve

by keeweechic Written Nov 25, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This park has 2.2 miles of winding hills. There is a paved trail which is 1 mile long for walking, jogging or cycling. The route is fairly twisty and hilly but is suitable for all levels of fitness. Within the entrance of the park is a pavilion with picnic tables, bbq grills and some toilets. There is also a playground near the trailhead.

Directions: The trail is 1.5 miles west of the Dallas North Tollway on Parker road

    St. Philopateer Coptic Orthodox Church

I had never heard of this church before but the architecture caught my eye. “Copt” is derived from the ancient Greek name of Egypt “Aigyptus”. The Coptic Church was the originator of the monastic movement in all its forms and it is well known for her numerous saints, ascetics, clergymen and laymen.

    The Road to Southfork

If there is one thing that is associated with Dallas, that is the world famous Southfork Ranch and the TV. series ‘Dallas’. The ranch has attracted millions of visitors ever since it became the homestead of the T.V. family, the Ewing clan. Its probably not quite the image you would imagine while driving up the long drive way. First what you see is the Visitors Centre and the Convention centre and a carpark full of cars and tour buses.

Located just 10 minutes from the Plano Centre, Southfork is open daily.

K’ Road to right on Parker Road 5.5 miles East from US 75.

    Southfork Visitors Centre

Actually I was quite impressed with the Visitor Centre range of gifts. Not just the tacky souvenir type goods you normally see but some very upmarket goods and not all naming South Fork on their products.

    Finally the Ranch itself

You can see the actually homestead – a little smaller than you would have imagined – by driving further on down the road from the main visitors entrance. To view the homestead you actually have to take a tour from the Visitors Centre. There are several items of memorabilia you can recognise from the series including Lucy’s wedding dress and Jock’s Lincoln Continental. A guided tram tour drives you around the ranch grounds and stops at Miss Ellie’s Deli and shop. I had just missed one tour and I wasn’t that much of a fan. Just seeing the Ranch was enough for me.
