  • Treasure Island

Treasure Island is a small strip that lies close to the Pottsboro side of Lake Texoma. There are picnic areas, campsites and restrooms. All the islands in the lake are popular on summer weekends. North Island lies behind and to the east of this island and I believe that this is the island to PARTY!! Some wild stuff happens on the beach of this...

  • Bird Life

The Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma is a rest haven for migrating and watering waterfowl. There are some 300 bird species which have been recorded on the refuge in addition, to huge flocks of migrants which pass through each fall and spring. Some have seen killdeer, snowy egrets, rails, plovers and sand pipers as well as blue herons and other wading...

  • Denison Dam and and Powerhouse

Denison Dam and and Powerhouse was constructed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to restrain 89,000 surface acres of water that makes up Lake Texoma. The dam provides hydroelectric power for North Texas and Southern Oklahoma. An interesting thing is that German POW labour was used in the construction which lasted from 1938 - 1944. Tours of Lake...

Looking across the lake to the Oklahoma side. There is a 5,426 ft long highway bridge across Lake Texoma at the Willis Ferry which was built in 1960 and replaced a previous crossing south of Woodville, Oklahoma, on Oklahoma State Highway 99 and Texas State Highway 91.

  • Getting around

No public transport but get around in whatever manner you choose. For me, a golf cart was a great choice around a friends property. There are plenty of boat hire/tour companies up on the lake to get you around for fishing. A lot will also supply all your fishing gear.

Nothing that you would go out of your way for in Pottsboro itself. A few little gift shops, antique shops, restaurants and not a lot else.

Pottsboro Local Customs

  • July 4th

On July 4th, the lake becomes a popular place for parties and of course the fireworks display. Hundreds of boats take to the water around the little islands and wait for nightfall to get an armchair view of the fireworks display. Its quite spectacular, both the amount of boats as well as the display itself. Perch yourself on a hill overlooking the...

Pottsboro Off The Beaten Path

  • Oklahoma Border - Durant

Durant lies in south-central Oklahoma only ten miles from Lake Texoma. If you travel up US Hwy 75 you will come to the border.

  • Sherman

Sherman is the county seat of Grayson and is a nice little stop off. Kelly Square - is a wonderfully 'old feel' downtown shopping mall. Walking through the doors, you are taken back in time and surrounded by antiques and memorabilia. There is also a restaurant on the 2nd level.

  • Denison

Denison is only 5 miles south east of Pottsboro in Grayson County which borders Oklahoma. Dwight Eisenhower's (34th President) Birth House is probably the most popular attraction. The M-K-T Katy Depot holds an important back to Denisons history. It also houses the Red River Railway Museum.

Pottsboro Favorites

  • My Dearest Memory

My fondest memory of all the wonderful trips to Pottsboro was of my dearest friend Mark. Mark was the most positive guy I have ever known given the circumstances of his diagnosis - cancer. He was funny, caring and just full on with life. Amongst his dearest friends was his dog Max who unfortunately died at an early age.. only a month before Mark....

  • Visiting Friends

We travelled up to Pottsboro to see friends who were living there. I had been told how lovely the Lake area was and even though we had an overcast and rainy day on our first visit, you could tell that this was the spot to be ,not to mention live. The hills, trees and views of the lake were wonderful (when you're not used to them) and some of the...

  • A Trek for Relief

One of our friends up there practically lives in his garage (except for sleeping/showering). This garage is large and equipped with a full kitchen and pot belly for the colder months. There is always something going on in that garage and its always blast. Last time a big new invention was in the making (and I'm not allowed to tell). The one thing...
