Pappy's Pantry: Good Home Cooking in Van Horn

by Basaic

This is a place to go for good home cooking. The decor is nostalgic with ads and photos from the road dating to the 50s and 60s and ites you might have seen in Grandma's kitchen. The staff was very friendly and the food was really tasty. Next time I am in Van Horn, I will stop here again, unless I am seeking a new place to write up for my fellow VTers. They specialize in Mexican Food but have a variety of American dishes too. I had a very tasty fish dish. Portions were only average but prep was great.

Carmona's Tex-Mex and Cantina: Great Mexican Food in Terrell

by Basaic

Carmona's consistantly wins awards in the Terrell area for the best Mexican Food. The decor is nice and the menu varied. They even have items for vegetarians. Service was friendly and professional. Try the Spinach Enchiladas, very tasty and healthy too.

Tip Photo
Ghost Town Cafe: Decent Food in Terlingua

by Basaic

In the ghost town of Terlingua, there are not a lot of choices for restaurants. I opted for the Ghost Town Cafe. It looked pretty good from the outside and had an interesting small town feel. The food was kinda average as was the service. Opens for breakfast at 6 AM. The Ham Steak was okay.

Edelweiss Restaurant and Brewery: Great Food in Alpine; and Beer!

by Basaic

While driving down US Highway 90 through West Texas, I decided to stop for dinner in Alpine. I saw a sign for the Edelweiss Restaurant & Brewery. Since I am a fan of German Cuisine I stopped here. The decor was very nice with a distinct German flavor and a touch of Christmas since it was in december. The menu was pretty varied and I opted for the Chicken in Plum Sauce. It was excellent. The portions could have been bigger but the food tasted great. My waitress was dressed in a white shirt and black pants. She was friendly and very efficient. Price was a little higher than average but was worth it. They also had a variety of local brews including one called Alpine Blonde which reminded me of. . . well never mind. The Chicken in Plum Sauce was excellent

Zio's: Very Good Italian Food in San Antonio

by Basaic

In addition to seafood, it is never very hard to get me to eat Italian. I have fairly high standards for Italian food having lived there. Zio's is very good. The decor is a strange mix of Italian style architecture and modern factory, with steel beams and industrial looking air conditioning outlets and lights. The wait staff (male and female) wears black pants and shirts with ties. I had a brand new waiter named Joel. He was doing very well. The waitress training him, a very cute girl named Gina, came by to check on how he was doing and the manager came by several tables to ensure everything was fine. I had Mama's Sampler; a combination of Fettucine Alfredo, Spagetti with large meatballs, and 7 Layer Lasgana. All were very good.

Hooters: Decent Food, Great Waitresses in San Antonio

by Basaic

Hooters is famous for their wings and their cute women in bright orange short shorts and Hooters T-shirts. I love their wings, their clam chowder and their chili. Gotta love the staff too. Friendly! Located on the Riverwalk. They have great clam chowder, spiced just right.

Tip Photo
Alfredo's: Good Mexican Food in Pecos

by Basaic

Alfredo's doesn't look like much from the outside (see photo) as a matter of fact I almost drove past it. The decor on the inside was okay but also nothing special. I ended up happy I stopped here. The food was better than average and the waitstaff efficient and professional (I did not get one of the cuter waitresses though). I had a well prepared Enchilada Platter. It was not the best ever but definitely above average.

Tip Photo
Jerry's Restaurant: Very Good Food in Onalaska

by Basaic

The town of Onalaska had a resort look to it as it is situated on Lake Livingston. Compared to that Jerry's Restaurant looked like it was stuffed into a building vacated by some business that went under. Not impressive at all. The interior was not that impressive either. The waitress was efficient enough. I ordered the Chicken and Dumplings, Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans. A dessert was included. The food was very good. If appearance and decor is high on your list of priorities, go eslewhere. If you are more interested in the quality of the food (as I am) give it a try. Biggest drawback is the smoking. The chicken and dumplings was quite good as was the dessert.

Tip Photo
Maiya's: Great Food in Marfa

by Basaic

Maiya's was kind of a surprise. The menu and ambience was not what you expect in a small town in West Texas. The menu includes such fare as a grilled Rib-eye Steak with Red Skinned Potatoes; North Atlantic Salmon; a Polenta Lasagna; and Chicken Agrodolce. Maiya's is open Wednesday through Saturday from 5 PM to 10 PM (excluding special events). Reservations are recommended. Full service bar. Not cheap but worth it! Try the Chicken Agrodolce

K Bobs Steakhouse: Nice Steakhouse in Fort Stockton

by Basaic

K Bob's specializes in steaks but also serves, chicken and fish and have their "salad wagon". The salad wagon has a variety of fresk vegetables, fruits salads and soups and a big pot of beans. Decor is slump block with ceramic tile floors and a few western style items on twalls. Food was good but the service was not so great. The hostess asked what I wanted to drink and I said Decaf. It never came. My waitress asked what two side dishes I wanted and I said Rice and Green Beans. All she brought me was rice. When I finally got her attention, she said "oh it only comes with one side". Couldn't she have said something? When I kidded the hostess that my coffee never came. she rudely said "I wasn't your waitress". Well, if you are not going to bring me a drink why ask, and why didn't the waitress ask what I wanted to drink? Food is a 4; service drops it back to 3. They serve beer. Hours are 11...
