The Salt Lick BBQ: Bring an appetite

by american_tourister

The Salt Lick is one of the 10 best BBQ joints in Texas. Texas Monthly magazine says so and they should know. The BBQ is done on an open pit in the main building where you can watch then cook and carve at the same time. They specialize in family style plates. They bring you individual plates and then platters of everything else. They bring it until you tell them to stop. Everything is good but what stands out to me is not so much the BBQ as it is the cole slaw. It is a vinegar based German style cole slaw that is wonderful. No mayo in this! Crisp cabbage, sesame seed, and vinegar.Don't pass up the banana pudding either!

Woody's: A great barbeque stop

by sswagner

If you should happen to find yourself driving I-45 between Dallas and Houston, you will find this place at the Centerville exit. There is actually one on either side of the highway. Ths is a combination of a gas station, a store, and a place to eat. You can eat the great barbeque in house and you can also buy some food to take with you. It makes a nice convenient stop to fuel up the vehicle and get some great food to eat. The smoked cheddar cheese, the sausage and beef brisket are amongst my favorites. Don't forget pecan pie for dessert (if you still have room)

Cooper's Pit BBQ: Hill Country BBQ in Round Rock

by american_tourister

Hill Country style. Mesquite wood smoked brisket so tender it falls apart. Brisket here. The brisket is so tender it falls apart. the sauce in thinner than most but is peppery like most hill country style BBQ sauces are. You can have a plate, snadwich or just buy it by the pound.

Luling City Market: Luling City Market! BBQ Heaven

by american_tourister

Luling City Market! Best damn BBQ in the world.Buy it by the pound and it is served on wax paper. Inexpensive and filling. The carnivore in you comes out.It is smoked for hours and hours in an old grocery store in the middle of downtown Luling. For years the BBQ was the sideline business to the store. It is now reversed. The BBQ is why people come. My sister drives all the way from Austin to buy it.There is another one in Houston but there is some sort of problem between the two sets of owners and they are completely separate entities. The food at the one in Houston is Good, reaaly good, but it lacks the character and atmosphere of the original. Smoked Elgin Sausage with pickles, onions, and longhorn cheese. Wash it down with a cold Shiner Bock beer and you done died and gone to heaven.

Stricklands: Great Local Flavor in Falfurrias

by Stephen-KarenConn

We stopped at a convenience store for gas while passing through the South Texas town of Falfurrias and asked the clerk where there was a good restaurant. He didn't seem to have a clue, however an older local gentleman overheard us and recommended Strickland's. It was obviously a local favorite. The place was decorated in a western theme and displayed an old carriage, a flatboard wagon, and two Longhorn Steer skulls. Life-size pictures of movie-star cowboys were on the walls, along with several posters of real-life outlaws and villians. The tables had red cloths on them, covered with clear plastic. The food was better than the decor. Tex-Mex seemed to be the speciality, and we seemed to be the only Gringos in the place. Karen had the Chicken Enchiladas, and I ordered the Mexican Combination Plate. Our meals were well prepared and flavorful. The young man who served us also did a good...

Palacios Mexican Restaurant: Lunch with Memories of Mom

by Stephen-KarenConn

While taking a road trip through south Texas recently I made it a point to visit the town of Edna in Jackson County. I was attracted to the town because the name "Edna" is very special to me. Edna Louise Conn was my mother, who passed away about seven years ago. Mom grew up mostly in Alabama, but also spent a portion of her childhood in El Paso, Texas, where her father was a telegraph operator for the Railroad.I stopped at a service station on the edge of town and asked a stranger where was the best place for lunch. He directed me to Palacios Mexican Restaurant. This family owned and operated eatery near the heart of Edna is a place my Mom would have found interesting. She was always fascinated by the Mexican culture. The walls of the storefront establishment were light pink, with hot pink and aqua trim. The chairs were red, tablecloths and carpet were green, and colorful Mexican hats...

Dixie Cafe: Hearne: Dixie Cafe

by ATXtraveler

During my trek to Waskom every other weekend or so, I normally choose to stop about an hour and half out of Austin to fill up on gas or to grab a good bit of lunch. When not in a hurry one of my favorite places to eat is the Dixie Cafe. One of the most famous dishes in Texas is Chicken Fried Steak, which is sort of a misnomer, since there is no chicken in this dish. It is simply a breading around a piece of chuck steak, and then deep fried. It is normally served with Cream Gravy and I like to have some hot sauce poured on top!

Nine Fish: Fantastic Sushi

by Astrobuck

This place is awesome! The sushi is great, the service is fantastic, and they even have live jazz playing while you eat! The atmosphere is just relaxing. I left there with almost no stress in my body. For real. It was that relaxing. Eat here, or you will greatly miss out. Be sure to call ahead and make reservations. They aren't required, but this place fills up fast. Also, dress accordingly. I'm not sure of a dress code, but when I was there, I dressed business casual. I saw many people dressed about the same, so at least dress on that level. Try the Tornado roll. Absolutely the best.

Romano's: Local Pizza

by Astrobuck

OK, this place....the guy who owns and runs it is a real pill. I used to work here. The guy is Jordanian, but claims to be Itallian....if you try to confront him with it, he flips out. He never flipped out on me, but he's a little wierd. I think he is suffering from some sort of identity crisis.Nonetheless, the pizza here is fantastic. All the dough is made fresh daily, and is made from scratch. There are tons of toppings to choose from, and there are also other types of dishes to choose from. You will miss out if you don't eat here. Romano's has pizza, stromboli, spaghetti, and other itallian dishes.
