Although it is mainly perceived as a main draw, Paseo del Rio, or River Walk, is much more than a tourist attraction. Since its initial construction in 1939, it has served as a crucial economic catalyst for the Mexican-American community of San Antonio. It has always been here, along the banks of the Paseo del Rio, where Mexican-Americans have always been able to find employment.

The Works Progress Administration (later Work Projects Administration) was one of the new deal programs created in May 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The WPA was the largest & most comprehensive of all the programs under the New Deal agency, having successfully employed millions of people in the United States.

In 1939, the WPA district engineer for San Antonio, Mr. Edwin Arneson, secured funding for the Paseo del Rio. Although there was a sufficient workforce in San Antonio in 1939, mainly comprised of Mexican-Americans, construction was delayed, as city officials were unable to find an adequate white labor force. Emma Tenayuca, in her never-ending defense of Mexican workers in depression-era Texas, repeatedly stormed the office of Edwin Arneson demanding that he permit the employment of Mexican-Americans in the construction of Paseo del Rio.
Due to the stress of timelines & the potentiality of losing funds, Edwin Arneson submitted to Emma Tenayuca’s pressure. On November 1939, both African & Mexican-American laborers were present during the groundbreaking ceremony for the GB (Great Bend) river project. With the sweat, blood, & tears of a diverse workforce, the Paseo del Rio was completed on March 13, 1941.

    Jim Cullum's Landing: Classic Jazz

  • Jim Cullum Jazz Band - San Antonio
    Jim Cullum Jazz Band
    by VeronicaG
Jim Cullum's Landing is one of the oldest jazz clubs around. Musician/owner Jim Cullum and his jazz band performs here six nights a week, with local groups performing on Sunday evenings.

The club is pretty snazzy with dim lighting, intimate seating and excellent acoustics. When we joined the jazz scene this December, one had to slip in before 9pm to get a good table. Dining is offered indoors or out, depending on the weather. The doors open at 3pm and close at 1 am. There was a moderate cover charge.

We heard quite a nice selection of music that evening. Collum sells his CD's on the spot, so if you hear anything you like you can take it home with you. We picked up a CD for my father that was loaded with Louis Armstrong tunes done by Jim and his band. My father, a jazz enthusiast, pronounced the CD 'excellent'.

The club was conveniently located a step away from the River Walk entrance to the Hyatt Hotel.

Enjoy the breathtaking view from the revolving dining room, 550 feet above ground.

You can see the tower from most anywhere downtown

Tower of the Americas is in HemisFair Park in downtown San Antonio, adjacent to the Convention Center.

As the name suggests, Zen is a high class San Antonio night club located downtown. A place to be seen on the scene and get your drink on.

    Rosario's: Everybody Salsa!

  • Rosario's in one of San Antonio's most popular Mexican restaurants (although not everybody agrees on the qualigy of the food there), but on Friday night, the live music kicks in and it becomes a great place for salsa dancers (or in my case, for people who like watching talented people dance salsa while sipping a cold maragarita!).

No real dress code but salsa dancers can look pretty sharp!

Built in 1929, closed in 1974, and reopened in 1989 after a $4.5 million restoration. It is the venue for many touring companies of Broadway shows, concerts, and The San Antonio Symphony.
Check to see what might be playing when you're in town to enjoy the show and, best of all, the intricate Art Deco architecture.

Final Four Accomodations: Nightclubbing in San Antonio

  • Well, it seems like your two questions conflict with each other. Let me try to clarify your intentions....

    Are you:
    (a) looking for a place with a great nightlife atmosphere, where you can enjoy the final four and also go out to a club or dance spot and enjoy a few beverages?

    (b) looking for an inexpensive way to enjoy your tickets to the premier basketball tournament finale without breaking the bank by staying a little farther away from the fray?

If you are looking for (a), then your only choice is to stay in downtown San Antonio by the Riverwalk. Drinking and Driving is unacceptable here, and therefore you would be limited to walking/cab distance, and this leaves you squarely in Riverwalk range. You can bet that is not going to be cheap for that weekend.

If you are looking for (b), then start by looking at San Antonio Airport hotels first, then expand to Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Seguin and Kerrville. If those do not have deals, move to San Marcos, Austin, Bastrop, Victoria. All of these locations will require you to have transportation, and none of those are convienent for bar-hopping and then driving.

Jim Cullum's Landing "..is located on the beautiful San Antonio Riverwalk, literally "just across the alley from the Alamo" in the Hyatt Regency in downtown San Antonio.
The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, America's premier 7-piece Classic Jazz ensemble, plays Monday through Saturday beginning at 7:30 PM. On Sunday nights, the popular San Antonio jazz group Small World takes over on the outside patio.

Live jazz duos are featured on the outdoor riverside patio (weather permitting) from 3:00 PM non-stop until 12:30 AM.

The menu of the Landing features fine cuisine, fine liquors, domestic & imported beers and wines, gourmet coffees, pies and cheesecake, and above all the hottest of hot jazz. All ages are welcome. Dress is casual.."
