One of the few local dive bars near the Riverwalk, this is a nice friendly place to cool off away from the tourists. We stopped in for just a few Shiner Bocks ($3 each?) and watched some sports on the huge flat-screen TV behind the bar. The bartender from Detroit was very friendly and happy to just sit and chat with her customers. The bar also has a pool table. Perhaps the most unique feature here is the old stone walls made with huge blocks of sand stone. Leave a Comment Theme: NightclubAddress: 214 Losoya StPhone: (210) 224-1224

I first heard of Maddogs in Hong Kong, so I was a bit surprised to find it in San Antonio as well. Located between Lasoya Street and the Riverwalk, Maddogs is in the heart of San Antonio's entertainment district and is one of the city's top bars. It is a traditional British-style pub with a good variety of European beers on tap such as Harp, Bass & Guinness. They also offer food, live entertainment, and cute girls in short kilts (but the men are in short kilts, too... just don't look at them). We stopped in here on our first night in the city to cool off after wandering around the Riverwalk for hours. We were a bit surprised & dismayed to see the bar was in the Hyatt Hotel, but then it seems all of the bars on the Riverwalk are in one hotel or another...nothing is as it seems here! We had a couple of quick beers in the dark bar then left to wander the city some more. Famous for its risque piano music, Durty Nelly's is probably the most fun place to drink in San Antonio. This place also has all you can munch peanuts with shells all over the place...inside no problem; outside watch out for the flocks of pigeons. With a great beer selection, I had no problem ordering a local Shiner Bock ($4.75), while my companion had a New Castle ($5.25). We sat outside where the volume of the music was bearable, but the pigeons were not. Leave a Comment

Rita's is one of several spots along the river that we stopped just to get off our tired feet and grab a drink. After about a day in the city, we hadn't yet tried a local margarita, so I had my eyes peeled for the right spot. What more could a man ask for during a margarita drought than a place called Rita's? We stopped in for just 45 minutes or so...enough time to try a top-shelf house margarita, see the nightly live entertainment, and smell the overpoweringly disgusting bathroom odor that permeates the underpass between the inner courtyard and the Riverwalk. In total: Good margaritas, horrible smell. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: 245 E. Places like the Esquire are usually my favorite joints anywhere I go: full of locals, cheap beer, historic building, nice view, not a chain, etc... But...this place eerily seemed like the bar called the "Titty Twister" from the movie "From Dusk til Dawn"... the dark lighting, staring locals, run-down building, cheap beer, ... everything but the vampires. Not a bad spot to sit outside on the quiet edge of the Riverwalk, but a creepy place inside. It does have the longest wooden bar in Texas at 79 feet. Cheapest beer on the Riverwalk. Leave a Comment

Like the original in New Orleans, San Antonio's Pat O'Brien's has hurricanes, a flaming fountain, an entrance lined with muskets, a noisy piano bar, Cajun cuisine and a quiet patio dining area. This replica has all the features of the St Peter's Street location minus the the flooding. I've been to the original, and once inside this San Antonio version, you can barely tell the difference. We enjoyed a few hours and a few hurricanes (rum, hurricane mix, crushed ice, orange & cherry) then decided to see more of the city. Besides the original in New Orleans and this San Antonio location, Pat O'Brien's has locations in Orlando, Memphis and Cancun. Leave a Comment

On our third day in San Antonio, I finally found a place where I could sit for more than two drinks... not only did I stay for four beers, but I decided this intersection of Lasoya and Alamo Streets was probably the best corner in the city with Tequila's and Pat O'Briens both within 20 yards. Lone Star Cafe is the street-level portion of the building also containing Cafe Ole and Michelino's Italian joint. What made Lone Star great was itsoutdoor tables overlooking the Riverwalk, Lasoya Street, and the busy intersection of Lasoya, Commerce, and Alamo. We sat here for probably 2 1/2 to 3 hrs enjoying the cold Tecate, excellent service and outstanding view. In late August 2006 I returned to San Antonio, hoping to have a seat at my favorite table at Lone Star, but it was all tore up and under construction. Hopefully whatever they end up with will be as good as the previous restaurant. I guess in a city like SA, everything has to be modern and up to date to attract customers. Nothing can be even a few years old... Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: 237 Losoya, San Antonio, TX 78205-2609Phone: (210) 223-9374Directions: RiverwalkWebsite: www.lonestarcafe.us

by Yaqui This dance club has three levels of dance floors, Polly Esther's has a disco on the second level, a Culture Club on the third floor and Techno or top 40 or industrial retro on the fifth level. The first level consists of a restaurant. I heard during the week from classmates only the second level is open for business and expect a pay a fee for entry.
