    A Pretty River Scene

As we finished up our tour of the King William District, we noticed a walkway meandering along the narrow San Antonio River. Since it was a pleasant day and we had a few minutes to spare, we made the decision to explore the area a bit.

There were more than a few ducks, geese and cormorants lazily paddling in the water. Soon we were greeted by a jogger and then a fellow walker, as we followed the paved path along the river.

A woman tossing bread to the ducks came into view, then this pretty view of the bridge reflected in the water.

FYI: This walkway was situated along Guenther Street near the Water Authority and the Guenther House.

Natural Bridge Caverns is located just a few miles from San Antonio and is worth the drive.
A 75-minute tour takes you through a half-mile of the largest and most spectacular show cavern in Texas.
The temperature is 70+ and humidity 90+ percent so it is not cool in these caverns.
It is steep and wet in places so wear your sneakers.

As you wonder either to and from the downtown area, enjoy many of the historic buildings that surround a square or plaza topped off with a beautiful fountain. The Bexar County Courthouse 1731-1978 is just on of many structures that are truely buildings of art. As quoted from a web page listed below: "The Wharton Independent, in 1888 observed: "It has been truly said that the glory of a people is inspired by the genius of their institutions, by the monuments they build and the edifices they erect . . . How well it is then, in this era of progress, that we people of Wharton should set up in our gateway a structure that shall proclaim to the world our advanced ideas, our high conception of patriotism, and our love for the beautiful in art . . . Build, build high this temple of justice, that the virtues of our people may endure forever." I think this illustrates the pride of past, present, and future citizens of San Anotonio have for their city.

Wow, while reading about the Torch of Friendship, there is much debate of how many locals do not like the sculpture. Some call it, "Gumby delivering a pizza." I think much of this comes from the amosity of political events that are a constant between the US and Mexico. Yet, everyone has there right to their opinion, but for myself I liked it a lot! I enjoyed the bright color and seeing it against the constrast of the clouds and blue sky. I just wished my camera took better pictures at the time. This sculpture was a gift to San Antonio by the Mexican General Consulate and other Mexican leaders in the community to represent the friendship and the roots many do share in Texas and Mexico. It color, which is called Sebastian (the scupltor) Red, stands 65 feet tall and sits on the intersection of Alamo, Losoya, and Commerce streets intersect so everyone could see it from all angles as they went about there lives everyday.

The Wildlife Ranch and the Natural Cavern are almost side by side, a short drive from San Antonio.
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is home to over 500 animals from around the world. See, feed, and photograph to your heart's content while you drive through this picturesque, Texas Hill Country ranch.
You are given one sack of food per carload and extra sacks are available for purchase.
As you drive around on the gravel road the animals come to the car to be fed. Watch your sack though because they will try to grab it.
The young kids love this place.

We visited this garden several years ago and were disappointed on our recent return visit to discover that it is not being well maintained. The water has been drained ... it could be for temporary maintainence but it appeared the areas had been dry for some time. It still has the nice stone work and some paths that are fun to walk. There were also some nice flowers. The gardens are located in an old quarry, which produced limestone used in building the State Capitol in Austin.

This is the first modern art museum in Texas. Located in and on the grounds of a 23 arce 1920's Spanish revival mansion. Some of the world's greatist artists are featured here like Rodin, Hopper, Cézanne, Picasso, Gauguin, Matisse, O'Keeffe.

There is also a great collection of early German religious themed paintings. The grounds are beautiful with ponds and sculptures.

The old San Antonio National Bank building was designed by a New York architect and completed in 1886, using limestone hewn from local quarries. It has ornate iron-work and moorish arches. It now houses law offices. It is just one block W from Hard Rock Cafe.

Milam 300 Year old Cypress Tree

One thing you will notice right away is how lush the Riverwalk is. One of the trees that the tour guide pointed out was this 300-year-old Cypress tree. Taxodium distichum is a native to the southeastern part of United States and they can grow to almost 40 M. These trees have very distinctive foliage. This beautiful tree branches twist and spiral in so many directions, which gives it such character.

Commerce Street, near intersection with Soledad Street

History: On the morning of December 7, 1835, a Mexican soldier perched in a cypress tree across the river fired into the courtyard of the Veramendi Palace, killing Col. Benjamin Rush Milam, one the commanders leading the Texan assault on Gen. Perfecto de Cos’ garrison during the Battle of Béxar. Although this incident was not a part of the Siege of the Alamo, it played an important role in events leading up to the 1836 battle. [Note: The best way to view the tree is to stand on the north side of Commerce Street, on the bridge near the intersection with Soledad Street. The tree, which has two trunks, is located near a tan colored multi-storied building.] http://www.thealamo.org/gallery.html
