One of the largest buildings in downtown San Antonio is home to the Alamo Dome, an extremely large multiuse stadium built with the original intention of a NFL football team. The San Antonio Spurs played here for several years until recently when they moved to a new arena north of town. The Alamo Dome is still the home to the Alamo Bowl college football game, the NCAA Final Four on multiple occasions, and various other large scale events. Eventually, San Antonio might be able to attract an NFL team and if so, this will likely be their venue of choice.

The Alamodome

As we admired San Antonio's cityscape from the Tower of the Americas, we discovered the Alamodome. After doing an internet search, I gathered a bit of information on this huge structure.

The Alamodome comprises 57 acres, can seat more than 65,000 people (72,000 when expanded), has two Olympic-size permanent ice rinks, contains 38 executive suites, 6,000 club seats and Sports Club, hosts concerts, trade shows, professional and college football teams, hockey, speed skating events and the San Antonio Spurs basketball team. It's quite the multi-purpose construction!

The Alamodome was nearly debt-free when it opened in 1993 due to additional sales tax levied on the community in 1989. The first major ice event to be held here was the U.S. Olympics for the speed skating, ice hockey and figure skating competitions in July 1993.

Alamodome as viewed from the tower of the America's.

This is a 160,000sqft building which provides facilities for basketball, football, concerts and other events. It is the only domed stadium in North America with two permanent ice sheets. There are tours if events are not scheduled at the time.

This is Texas-size stadium hosts the Alamo Bowl, and the Monster Jam. This stadium is so big two college football games could occur simultaneously on 2 differerent fields--all under the same roof. Now that's Texas-size!

Equipment: As usual, bring money.
