Of course through the years this attraction has revolved into adding improvements, but a special memory for me while on my one day pass as a treat during basic training was me and a fellow trooper dressed in our Blues and after getting on the wrong buses and finally getting on the right bus had arrived at the park, but it wasn't open due to the end of the season. We were both bummed and just kind of wondered around not knowing what to do with ourselves. A park attendant noticed our dismay and asked if we wanted to go up into the tower. After we closed our mouths and got to the top we took in all the wonderful sights from the top. The View is awesome! I think we made that attendants day, as he made our day. Thank you still to this day!

Tower of the Americas takes you 750 feet above San Antonio for a birds eye view of the city. As you streak to the top, a glass sided elevator provides a panoramic view. The tower was constructed for the World HemisFair in 1968.
Atop the tower an outdoor area can be accessed. It was extremely windy the day we visited making this area a quick stop, but inside is a different story--you're sheltered from the wind and audio segments present the city's history as you glimpse the streets below.

At street level, take in the 4-D theatre ride featuring the many different faces of Texas. A combination ticket provides a limitless day pass, which was great for the grandkids. We saw this ingenious film twice due to its "kid appeal".

the tower of the americas is located in hemisfair park next to the convention center. the 750 foot tower offers an impressive view of san antonio. the tower also has the chart house restaurant and a bar.
Located in Hemisfair Park, the 750 ft Tower stands as a reminder of the 1968 World's Fair and it is a great place to go during the evening to enjoy a beautiful view of San Antonio. You have to pay to get to the observation deck so one little trick is to go to the High in the Sky lounge for a drink, and then go up to the deck. That way, you'll still have to spend a few bucks but at least you're getting a drink out of it!!
For more than 35 years, the 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas has offered residents and tourists of San Antonio, Texas, the most breathtaking view of the Alamo City. Visitors dine at the Tower’s revolving restaurant or enjoy the scenery from the observation deck. Now, Landry’s Restaurants, Inc. has taken the experience to a whole new level. Among the improvements are an upscale eatery, banquet facility and a Texas-themed 4-D, multi-sensory theater.

As for now I have not gone up to the top of the Tower of the Americas, nor eaten here but I just love the pictures that you can take from MILES away. It's really a neat structure and has a lot of fun history, too. The views of San Antonio are breathtaking from the top, I'm sure. But until the future I cannot vauge for the experience.
Buying a ticket to go up to the observation deck for the beautiful view also gets you a 4D ride called Skies Over Texas, that takes you on a neat HD movie that makes you think you're on the aircraft filming the scenes.
They have a (cheaper) cafe on the first floor of the Tower and then they have the nicer Chart House by Landry's Corp. which usually requires a jacket, or nice dress.
One of my favorite parts of the Tower is the gift shop! :) Gotta love a place to get your San Antonio souvenirs.
A bit of history I collected:
"Tower of the Americas is a 750-foot observation tower/restaurant in San Antonio, Texas. The tower was designed by San Antonio architect O'Neil Ford and was built as the theme structure of the 1968 World's Fair, HemisFair '68. The tower was the tallest observation tower in the United States from 1968 until 1996, when the Las Vegas Stratosphere Tower was completed (wikipedia.org).
Essential Details for Visiting:

Adults $10.95, Seniors & Military $9.95, Children $8.95
Hours: Sun-Thurs 10am-10pm; Fri-Sat 10-11pm
**Be careful with parking, since it's downtown!

We went up the tower late afternoon with the intention of staying until dark to see the transformation. However there were no seats up there, it was still pretty hot and windy on the outside deck and we didn't wait for complete darkness. It had also been a long day.
I've been to a lot of cities all over the world who have their own version of the tower of the americas (i.e. CN tower of toronto, etc.) and what changes with each city is basically the view which is what you go up there for anyway. Other than that there's really nothing great about this structure really. They have a restaurant at the top as well as a special ride wherein they show you like an educational video about Texas but that's about it. The views are okay as you'll get to see the city of San Antonio spread out before you but that's about it. For a fee of USD10.95 I don't think its worth visiting honestly.
The 750-foot Tower of the Americas was a central "theme structure" of the 1968 HemisFair. Today you can ascend to the top where there is a restaurant and an observation deck offering a spectacular view of the city. There is also a Texas themed theater. The trip up to the top in the glass walled elevator is neat too. Hours are 10 AM to 10 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10 AM to 11 PM on Friday and Saturday. Admission is $10.95 for adults; $9.95 for seniors and military; and $8.95 for kids 4 to 12. You also have to pay for parking.
This is a 750 foot tower which gives panoramic views from its observation deck. Telescopes are provided on the inside viewing but there is an outdoor view area right around as well, just hang on to your hat.
There is also a revolving restaurant 550 feet up which serves lunch and dinner.
The Observation Deck is open 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday – Thursday; 9 a.m.-11 p.m., Friday –Saturday.

It's the Space Needle, in San Antonio. I've seen two or three of these in various parts of the world, and they're never all that exciting. Somehow, it's larger than the Space Needle, but gets much less pub.
It was made for the 1968 World's Fair, and it was probably much more impressive then.
It's a must see, but don't spend too much time there. Just go up, get a quick shot of the scenery, and move on to more interesting adventures.
This huge tower, built for the 1968 World's Fair, is a symbol of San Antonio that ranks second only to the Alamo. It stands 750 feet tall. From the top, it offers an awesome view of the entire city. I never visited the restaurant up there, so cannot comment on it.
It's currently closed for renovation. It will reopen in 2007. Please check the website or call the number below for updates.

Another San Antonio tradition. This tower has one of the best views in town. There are elevators that can take you up the tower and for those romantics souls i'd recommend a dinner at the restaurant on top. It's a bit overpriced, but hey, you're paying for the mood no? Enjoy the food and view!
