Louie's Beer Garden and Oyster House: My Favorite Bar in San Marcos

by Basaic Written Feb 19, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

My favorite place in San Marcos, though, is Louie's Beer Garden and Oyster House. Louie's has a great and varied menu (I tried a few bites of their Blackened Catfish which was great! along with a couple of oysters), over 100 beers, and a full bar if you prefer a rum and coke (like me). They also have a nice garden/outdoor seating area. The crowd here was very friendly and accepting of an almost 60 year-old in their midst. Great staff too. Hours are 11 AM to 12 AM daily.

Dress Code: College Casual. Try not to wear anything from a university in Oklahoma ;-)

Harper's Sports Pub: Even Better Place For Nighlife

Also across the street from the courthouse is Harper's Pub. This was my favorite place on this street. They have good pizza, reasonably priced drinks and "The Veranda" a rooftop Daiquiri Bar. Nice staff and a lively crowd. Located in the historic Harper's Hall built in 1873. Hours are 4 PM to 2 AM Monday through Friday and 11 AM to 2 AM Saturday and Sunday.

    Dress Code: Casual.

The Taproom and the Black Rabbit: Looking For a Drink?

by Basaic Updated Feb 19, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I went bar-hopping with some new friends in San Marcos since it was the day before my birthday. I was twice the age of about anyone in the bars. There are a few options if you are looking for nightlife in San Marcos. Two are just across the street from the courthouse and right next to each other.

The Taproom: Offers 42 beers on tap and 60 bottled beers from around the world. Also offers bar style food and a full bar if you are not that much into beer. Stumbling distance (though a bit long) from the university so it is popular with the students. Hours are 11:30 AM to 12 AM Sunday through Wednesday and 11:30 AM to 1 AM Thursday through Saturday. 129 E Hopkins St # 120, San Marcos, TX 78666 http://taproomsanmarcos.com/

The Black Rabbit: This saloon is next door and I liked it a bit better. In addition to the drinking and eating they have skee-ball, darts, and some good pool tables. The crowd seemed a bit livelier and I liked the staff better. Hours are 5 PM to 2 AM.

    Tap Room: Huge beer selection

by klasher Written May 20, 2007

42 beers on tap and 20 in bottles are available at the Tap Room. There are excellent specials almost every day; discounted beers, half price appetizers every night and more. The burgers are the best I have found in the Central Texas area.

  • LIVE MUSICTRIPLE CROWN:...

    LIVE MUSIC
    TRIPLE CROWN: http://www.triplecrownlive.com/

If you are looking live music by some of the best unknowns in the land...look no further than Triple Crown.

    GORDO'S:

The larger acts (Cory Morrow...Vallejo..etc) play at Gordos. You can get a decent meal there too. Fred the cook rocks.

    CHEATHAM STREET WAREHOUSE:

This is where I would have spent my childhood if I could have. The best Hill Country Musicians play here weekly.

    DRINKING SPOTS
The Draft Choice: (139 E. Hopkins)

It's on the Square..and it's got good cold beer, NTN Trivia and Darts. Sports is on the TVs that doesn't have the trivia game on. As the evening progresses it gets more and more crowded..so if you're looking for a quiet evening you'll have to find somewhere else after 10:30p.m.

    Jack's Just-A-Beer-Joint:

What a great place. It's a little bit out of town..has good beer specials...darts...and I once lost $20 in a 'bet you wont dance on this bar' contest.

    POOL
    CATS Billiards (143 S. LBJ)

It's not the nicest place in the world...and it's not the most friendly place in the world....and I wouldn't take my kid there...but it's a cool place to play some pool and have some fun. They have tables to rent by the hour and coin operated ones.

    the Square: the Square

by haimee Written Aug 26, 2002

The Square is the area surrounding the county Courthouse in San Marcos. There is a handful of bars one just like the other. Most offer live music on the weekends. My favorites are Draft Choice(a sports bar), Gordo's(a venue for great local live music) and the Tap Room (offering a wide selection of beers on tap, ofcourse). But beware, the bars shut-down at midnight in this little town.

Dress Code: Dress is casual for the most part during the week but on the weekend most bar-hoppers dress up.
