    The Salt Lick

by klasher Written Apr 21, 2008

Off the beaten path and a pretty drive through Driftwood brings you to the Salt Lick BBQ Restaurant. This is probably the best barbecue I have ever tasted. Oh-and it's BYOB! We sat on the patio and listened to the live band under the oaks as we toasted each other for being so thrifty to dine at a place without the alcohol tab.

    Railroad from the Far West

Walking along the San Marcos river, I first passed under a regular concrete bridge for a road and then really struck by surprise, I discovered this old wooden bridge!!

I thought it was the old bridge they left there but I soon realised the rail tracks on this bridge were still in use! That means train are still passing over this bridge!! Simply incredible...

For a country where railroad companies have wriiten part of the history, it is so surprising to realise the trains are mainly used for good transport, people simply travel by plane!

San Antonio is the eighth largest city in the U.S. and the third biggest in Texas, south of San Marcos. The famed River Walk, Tower of the Americas, the Mercado Mexican-style marketplace, theme parks, art museums are well patronised. Of course the Alamo is also here.

New Braunfels is a little bit of old Germany right in the middle of the Texas Hill Country, just south of San Marcos. The German influence in tradition, culture and language still prominent and this area has become famous for its sausages and breads and you can dine at bier gartens and dance to oompah music. It is also known as being a popular river resort for all kinds of activities like tubing, rafting, swimming and fishing.

This place is so cool and we found it by accident driving past. You step back in time wandering through the general store. They sell Texas Gourmet foods and souvenirs, collectibles, antique country furniture, jewellery and an amazing amount of antique coca cola stuff (fridges, iceboxes… anything you can think of). You can even buy online. Down the other end of the ‘shack’ type building is a small café.

The old wooden timber floors and the soda bar with the homemade fudge in various flavours. They claim to have the ‘best malts and shakes on IH35”. They also claim the best homemade hamburgers – everything made from scratch. Everywhere you look there is a wonderful mix of old store fixtures and advertising signs hanging all over the place.
