Kobe: Very Good Japanese Steakhouse
Kobe Japanese Steakhouse. $26 as of January 2015. Kobe looks more impressive inside than outside. It serves Teppanyaki style Japanese food, steaks, seafood, and sushi. The staff was efficient and the food was good, though kinda expensive. Hours are 11 AM to 9:30 PM daily.
Favorite Dish: Try the Scallops!

Logan's Roadhouse: My Choice in San Marcos
Logan's Roadhouse. $17 as of January 2015. My choice in town, though is Logan's Roadhouse. Less expensive, less formal and the food was very good. I had a great waiter and we made friends fast. In addition to a varied menu they have a full bar, and a couple of neat murals. Worth a try!!
Favorite Dish: Chicken Teriyaki with Creamed Spinach.

The Root Cellar Cafe: Fresh food in the square
My favorite restaurant in San Marcos. Currently it is BYOB, I'm not sure how long that will last! The cafe has a casual and intimate setting and the waitstaff are friendly and remember you when you come back. Everything I have eaten there is fresh and well prepared. The menu has a little bit of everything-pasta, beef, pork, seafood, salads, sandwiches. Most all entrees are less than $13. Breakfast is cozy, with many healthy selections.
The walls are decorated with local artist's works which you may purchase.
**No longer BYOB 8-09
Favorite Dish: I love the bruchetta!
San Marcos River Pub and Grill: Located on the San Marcos River
Great place located on the San Marcos river. Outdoor seating overlooking the river available. Great american cousine, burgers, chicken etc. Features free outdoor entertainment during Sundays in the summer. Full bar.
Favorite Dish: Chicken fried steak is huge, they have a half portion. Club sandwhich, buffalo chicken burger. Have never had anything bad off the menu.

Newton's Gang: Comfort Food
Newton's Gang Restaurant is located on the square in San Marcos. The menu is pretty diverse, with comfort food holding the spotlight. Portions are huge, so get something you can reheat for lunch the next day.
This restaurant was once an old bank and "The Getaway" with Steve McQueen was filmed here. There are several rooms that may be used as a private party room-one being the old vault.
Favorite Dish: MEATLOAF!!
Palmer's: Great Happy hour
Beautiful outdoor courtyard for Happy hour. Half priced appetizers and good drink specials from 4-6. the crab cakes are excellent and happy hour prices get you 2 for $5. The steak dinner was good, if not a little overpriced for the quality.
Bennigan's Grill and Tavern: Irish Fun
This is a chain of casual, sit down restaurants offering any type of food from steak to sandwiches, salads to things from the grill. They have a great bar that is pretty well priced for the area.
They have a wonderful daily happy hour. I believe it is from 5pm-7pm and then 9pm-11pm. During that time they offer selected $3 appetizers and $2 drinks. The drinks include margarita on the rocks, cosmopolitan, draft beer, and a few others. In the bar area they have a few televisions, juke box, and have yet to see a rude person.
It's a fun, laid back atmosphere. People come here with their families, after a ball game, on a date, and so on. There has to be something you'll like!
Again, since this is a chain there are many of these locations around Dallas. Find the one that is closest to you from their website.
Favorite Dish: If I'm eating a meal I love the Turkey O'Toole. It is sliced turkey served on a pretzel bun with melted swiss cheese and covered with honey mustad.
If I'm here for happy hour I order the Irish cheese fries along with the margarita, cosmopolitan, or a draft beer. The tab is always nice during happy hour no matter how many drinks you have :)
Taco Bueno: Best Fast Food
Yes, America is all about fast food. It's cheap, fast, and easy! While in San Marcos I always make sure to stop at Taco Bueno!! It is great tex-mex food with a lower price. Although loaded in calories I always save one meal to splurge and this is definitely the one!
*No alcohol is available like some places around here though.
Favorite Dish: My favorite meal is the Mucho Nachos (without the chili sauce or refried beans) with a soft beef taco. It is enough for two people, unless you're really hungry!! They put plenty of queso and tomatos on top which I always enjoy. However, because of all the the toppings some of the chips lose their crunch. I love it!! My mom hates nachos like that so be advised!
The tacos both hard and crispy are fantastic. I've heard the tortilla soup is great, although it's usually only available in the colder months. The mexi-dip is also great. You get beans, guacamole, and a cheese puff to dip your chips in.
Sean Patrick's: Patio on the Square
Great location, right in the center of town. Pretty diverse menu, pub grub. They have a nice, small deck that faces the street and a nice beer selection. The interior is loaded with televisions, so if watching sports and drinking is on your agenda, stop by here. Food is mediocre, but it is pretty hard to screw up a burger.
River Pub: Cool Patio
The food at River Pub is unremarkable-average...you go for the patio. The patio overlooks the San Marcos River and you have a front row view to the kayak course. Long waits for a patio table on nice days!
Favorite Dish: Burgers are good and the chicken tacos are too.
Manas: Great Mexican Food
The place is small but the people, customers and wait staff are very friendly. The food is down home mexican food. ANd you get alot of it.
Favorite Dish: I love the combo plates or the 3 chalupa plate. I like to try something new there everytime I travel to San Marcos

Mexican Food:Baby Joe's...
Baby Joe's Mexican Restaurant (316-D N. Edward Gary)
It's owned by a cool family...really laid back and it has all-you-can-eat Tuesdays.
The best steak in town goes to Texas Reds (120 Grove St. & Guadalupe). More expensive than Logans Roadhouse...not a chain...and you can throw peanut shells on the floor. My nephew loves Logans (peanut shells may still be thrown)...so if taking a family...Logans may be the best bet.
Centerpoint Station (3946 IH-35 S.)...but you have to wade through the rude-as-all-get-out waitstaff and owners before getting to it...so I get my burgers nowadays at The Tap Room (129 E. Hopkins St., Ste 120) which is the same place I get the best chicken wings in town.
Joe's Italian - It's inexpensive, they have excellent food, and they treat you good.
Valintino's Pizza (110 N. LBJ Dr) is the best if you eat it there.
Papa John's (216 E. Hopkins St.) is the best for delivery (just as good in-house)
Favorite Dish: FAVORITE FOOD AT FAVORITE RESTAURANTS:
At Baby Joe's - The Fajitas rock like Slayer.
Texas Reds - Steak...but of course.
At Joe's Italian - The stromboli and calzones at really...really good.
Tap Room - Burgers and wings.
Valentinos - Pizza..if in store
Papa John's - Pizza...if delivered
Cajun Mama's Restaurant: Cajun Mama's Restaurant
The only Cajun food place in or near San Marcos is owned by a genuine Cajun mama. With the help of her sons she does all of the cooking. The place has a very homey feel as pictures of the Cajun mama's family decorate the walls along with her own antiques. If you have a chance chat with her while you're there. She's quite a character.
Favorite Dish: Brown Jumbalaya
Mana's Grocery and Grill: Mana's Grocery and Grill
This is another family owned Mexican food restaurant(we have a lot of them) with great prices. They have lunch specials seven days a week. The place is a little hard to find (it's tucked away into a neighborhood) but well worth the trouble.
Favorite Dish: The Juarez Combo includes one cheese enchilada, one beef enchilada, a taco, a chalupa and rice and beans. Yummy! Their breakfast burritos are also great and served all day.
Palmer's Restaurant, Bar and...
Palmer's Restaurant, Bar and Courtyard
Palmer's has a romantic atmosphere. This place is great in the winter, they have fireplaces in the bar, and in any other time out in the courtyard.
Favorite Dish: Angel Hair Pasta
