Not very large in size but possessing a ton of heart and determination, the Sea Turtle Rescue Center is an operation unlike no other. From the moment you step foot inside the building, you are overwhelmed with an abundance of information, factual in nature, pertaining to the lives of various species of sea turtles. All of the animals that reside in the refuge have been the victims of predator attacks, abuse at the hands of man, or were injured, internally, after ingesting plastic bags and other trash, dumped into the ocean by careless people. Many of the animals were found in Galveston, some 200 plus miles away, and transported to South Padre Island for care. The refuge does not receive any special assistance, financially speaking, from the U.S. government (or any other governments for that matter) or private donors; every single penny they receive comes from local donations, visitors who flock to the refuge. (There is no admission fee to enter the facility.) The funds they do manage to raise are dispersed between three or four different operations; one locally in South Padre Island, which, I believe, is the unofficial headquarters; one in Costa Rica; and the other in Southeast Asia. Interestingly, the refuge’s number one source of locating sea turtles that wash ashore on South Padre Island are the thousands of tourists who visit the island each and every year. As a matter of fact, South Padre Island is so committed to the survival of these creatures - especially the endangered leatherback sea turtle – that their local 9-1-1 emergency system can be used to report the finding of a sea turtle – and apparently tourists stumble upon them a great deal while walking along the shoreline. One of the Live Events-Right on S Padre Blvd. by TexasDave Generaly held the 2nd or 3rd weekend of October(check website), thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from many different parts of U.S. and Mexico migrate to SPI. At times the island sounds like an over-sized bee hive from all the bmm-bmm-bmm's of the "hogs". Scenic rides are arranged (one to Matamoros on the Mexican border) as well as concerts, an open-air Biker's Breakfast, booths selling biker accesories, etc. Harley-Davidsons prevail. Most activities take place at the Convention Center or the Schlitterbahn parking lot. Leave a Comment

How-to lessons for kids given under the tent by TexasDave, 4 more photos Started in 1987, this annual event draws professional and amatuer sand sculptors from all over. Cash prizes are given and generally there are many dozens of sculptures to admire. Free classes are given to both children and adults. The exact venue has changed over the years, but lately it has been on the beach behind the Sheraton hotel. It seems to get bigger every year! It is usually held on the 3rd or 4th weekend of October, the week following Biker's Fest (see that tip). Leave a Comment

This is usefull when driving in southern texas. If a person is wanting to pass you, you can stay at the same speed you are going but, you pull into the sholder of the lane, so the car can pass even if there is another car coming the other direction. You will she exactly what i am talking about when you are down in this area. Leave a Comment

You will notice the further south you go in Texas, the more Hispanics you will encounter. Immigration is a touchy subject in most parts of Texas so I would avoid mentioning it. Leave a Comment
