by TexasDave This place has a cozy family-oriented atmosphere. Do not expect elegant dining or refined service. Great breakfast specials, including several different kinds of sweet buns, bear claws, etc. During the day they also offer all-you-can-eat fried fish at a good price. This is a good substitute for Marchan's White Sands (see my Port Isabel pages) if you don't feel like crossing the Causeway. UPDATE: ROVAN'S IS PRESENTLY CLOSED, A SHAME! It's great to get good beer in a tourist area. The Brewery has great seafood, and seems to be a magnet for the young (upscale?) crowd. I was there on a Thursday night in May, and there were no empty tables. The waitresses flirt with even old guys like me.
Try their Brewed Beer Sampler- for $3.75 you get four ounce servings of their best 5 brews. You may not like them all, but, if you are a beer lover, you'll find at least two that will make you order more. And yes…you can get your shrimp or fish grilled or blackened (whatever that means) at Dirty Al’s! This place seems to be packed from the time it opens until the time it closes, with a clientele that is just…well…they just can’t seem to find a way to pipe down: there were quite a few other customers who enjoyed yelling and shouting too much. But nothing they said was offensive or profane; their only fault was that they were just too loud. Despite the calamity caused by these other patrons, I quite enjoyed the atmosphere, though I think the restaurant was greatly influenced by Chillis (an American restaurant chain) in regards to the décor of the interior. The food was absolutely sensational, the best we had managed to feast on since the onset of our trip to South Padre Island; everything tasted heavenly, to say the least. My only complaint with Dirty Al’s was the portions: I left the restaurant hungrier than when I first came in. I’m not sure if it was because of the poor U.S. economy or a sudden increase in the price of seafood, but they were intolerably stingy with the servings.
My favorite dish (the only one I’ve eaten thus far) was the shrimp – fish – oyster combo, comprised of three large Gulf shrimp, a small fillet of flounder, and three small oysters – needless to say I, the Global Glutton, was not very pleased. Looking at me: you would never be able to tell that I utterly despise fried food; for some unknown reason it never settles right in my stomach. My wife and children have adopted the same stance; a rather odd and I’m sure foreign concept for my wife considering she is a “natural” Texan. (The term natural in this context refers to a person who was born and raised in the Lone Star State.) During our searches on both South Padre Island and Port Isabel, we found the task of finding a place that offered grilled or boiled seafood quite daunting: waitresses often looked at us as though we were crazy whenever such a question was broached. I started to get upset, contemplating the idea of abandoning my conviction, in order to grab some grub. After spending countless hours searching for a restaurant that matched our criteria, the employee manning the front desk at our hotel suggested that we try Daddy’s Seafood and Cajun Kitchen – and boy was I glad we did. Upon entering the parking lot, we noticed that practically all the parking stalls were occupied. We perceived this to be a good sign of delicious things to come, but we had to spend fifteen minutes circling around the restaurant until a space opened up. After securing a stall near the main entrance, we entered the restaurant and were completely overwhelmed by the aroma that floated through the air, striking our nostrils like some sort of silent, deadly assassin. A materde greeted us and began to speak; we heard absolutely nothing. We were escorted to a table, way in the back, directly in front of the rear emergency exit. The table appeared to be comprised of the foulest wood, rotted, and, in some unknown way, managed to stand erect, despite the constant shifting, swaying, and apparent weakness of all four legs.
I ordered the grilled salmon which came with grilled green beans; my wife ordered a fillet of flounder, covered in some sort of almond breading, with sautéed potatoes; my daughter ordered a fillet of tilapia, her favorite kind of fish; and my son, as always, ordered a pound of crawfish, or mud bugs. The food was full of flavor which, upon entering your mouth, exploded into a symphony of edible pleasure, throwing each and every taste bud in to a whirling fit: it was as though the administrators of Hell had descended upon man and embodied the heart of evil into our food; and had this been the case, I succumbed to the temptation. The Name Says it All! by TexasDave This is a very no-atmosphere, no-nonsense, eating establishment. In fact you'll be sitting on furniture direct from Sam's Club, and there will be a local's bar within sight of all the tables. But they know how to do breaded and fried seafood.

by rsleisk Good food and service. Great view of the bay, especially at sunset. The interior is cooly decorated with all sorts of beach paraphenilia. There is a pier you walk out on. There is a place you can rent jet skis and plenty of sea gulls to feed.
Good pasta dish. Leave a Comment

If you want to try the best taco ( Burrito not fried) anywhere try this place. It isn't on the Island but in Port Isabell right off Highway 100. This place is a small cafe that just really locals eat at. I reccomend the Huevos y Chorizo con queso. That is the eggs and mexican sausage and cheese taco. It is huge but if you want you can order the small one. The large is bigg enough to savor later or share and is around 5 bucks. This place isnt fancy and doesnt require attire. I use to go there after a morning surf in my shorts and t-shirt and sandals. Don't go there to impress it isnt that type of place. Just a place to eat the best foods around. Handmade tortillas that are to die for. I crave them on a daily basis since I moved. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average

Apparently this dump is a tourist favorite. We went early and were seated right away. The tables are intensely closely spaced to make room for as many customers as possible, so we felt crowded. We ordered beers, each of which was about the price of a six-pack at home in Austin. The cold peel-and-eat shrimp we got for an appetizer were fine, but it's hard to swallow paying that kind of price for something that looks like it was just taken out of the fridge premade and covered in plastic wrap. I mean, is it really appropriate to serve cocktail sauce in a disposable plastic cup at a sit-down restaurant? Hubby's burger was fine, well-cooked, but the fries were completely tasteless. I got the fried shrimp and scallop plate with mashed potatoes - shrimp were adequate, but the scallops had some sort of weird liquid coming out of them. The mashed potatoes definitely were just-add-water. And again with the plastic cup of cocktail sauce. Which all would have been just fine if we'd gotten it at a discount family buffet for 20 bucks, but pretty unforgivable at the jaw-dropping price we saw on our bill. On our way out, a crowd had gathered waiting to be seated, and we realized that the best part of our meal was that we hadn't waited in line for it. This restaurant was always busy when we drove by it. We ate there Monday night. Everyone sits or stands outside while waiting for a table inside. We had to wait about 20 to 30 minutes during the off season, but you will probably wait considerably longer during the weekends or during the high season. My wife and I ordered Onion Rings for an appetizer, and both of us thought they were very good. We both ordered the Monday special, which was Fried Shrimp. Our shrimp, salads and baked potato were very good, and the service was OK. Two iced teas, an appetizer, and two Specials cost $28.31. This restaurant was recommanded and we were glad we paid them a visit. Seven of us visited south padre between July 23 - 29, 2006 and had a great time. We all tried something different on Blackbeard's menu and everyone was pleased. The Red Snapper was excellent and the best I had ever tasted. Serve was great. Get their early - busy place.
