Where can you go that you can fish all day and have the restaurant of your choice cook your catch to your specifications. Lots of folks do it every day here at South Padre Island. There are approximately 600 different species, but the most commonly caught fish are the red or black durm, spotted sea trout and southern flounder in the bay, and tarpon, red snapper, king mackerel, amberjack and pompano in the gulf. More than 60 local charter companies and personal guides stand ready to take you on a fishing trip to remember, or you may cast your line from shore as these pictured are doing.

    Hike Around The Sand Dunes

On our second day of our trip, we rented some bicycles and headed out to the remote or I should say lesser traveled portion of South Padre Island, an area that encompasses the southern tip of the island. Travel southbound on Park 100; you’ll eventually, after traveling eight or ten miles, come upon the proverbial “end of the road” – here you’ll be able to go swimming in a less crowded area or hike all around some rather large sand dunes; we chose to go hiking.

The sand was unbearably hot for me, the fool, as I chose to hike in flip flops; my wife and children were the smart ones – they wore sneakers. The sand dunes stretch for as far as the eye can see, and they contain a wide variety of wildlife – jack rabbits, sea turtles, and numerous species of birds.

I would navigate the dunes around 7:00 p.m., as this seems to be right around the time when the temperature starts to cool off; we decided to venture off into the dunes around 2:00 p.m., a dumb idea.

This part of the island is uninhabited save for a couple of campers and trailers spread about, here and there; furthermore, there were no signs of construction – it seemed as though the city planned to keep this part of the island natural.

I suggest all of the following:

    1. A sturdy pair of sneakers designed specifically for hiking.

    2. Sunblock lotion.

    3. Water.

    4. Thin socks, cotton in construction.

    5. sunglasses

    6. First aid kit.

Several places rent equipment and give classes on this relatively new sport which combines flying a kite, gliding, and surfing all in one activity. Novices and intermediates practice in the bayside of SPI where the water is frequently smooth, experts go over to the Gulf side and work the waves. Some get up enough speed to get themselves airborne, do flips in mid-air, etc.

The gulf of Mexico can be turbulent at times, this is great for the surfers but not the bathers.

If you like wind powered sports....

If you like windsurfing or kiteboarding then South Padre Island should be on your list. South Padre warms up earlier in the spring and stays warm later in the fall than 95% of the U.S. April-June and Oct-Dec are the most popular months. And luck would have it that these months also offer offseason lodging rates so the adventure won't break the bank. Many who are able work remotely and chase the wind come in Oct and don't leave until May as it is good all winter. As kiteboarding is wind powered it is a great eco-tourism option for adventure enthusiasts.

If you are taking kiteboarding Lessons the gear is included with the lessons price. Otherwise bring as many kites as you can. With the high cost of luggage on the airlines renting a kiteboard is a nice option. You can trade in the board to match the wind speed of the day so you always have the right size board. Board rental for a day is $35 or $99 for the week.
