Called "The Wave", it's a free shuttle bus that makes a continual loop from Pt. Isabel, over the causeway, and down Padre Island Blvd. to the Convention Center. Bus stops are marked by signs and the bus is a bright yellow with "The Wave" written on the sides. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The only link between the mainland and South Padre Island is the Queen Isablella Memorial Causeway, across the Laguna Madre Bay. The 2.-mile-long span is the longest bridge in Texas. Completed in 1975, this impressive structruture was named for the Spanish monarch who financed Christopher Columbus' first voyage of discovery to the New World.
In 1991 a runaway barge knocked five sections out of the bridge at the cost of eight lives. For two months ferries carried traffic to and from the island while repairs were being made. The cranes seen in this picture are installing "bumpers" to prevent such a horrible accident from happening again. Before the tragedy the bridge was simply called the Queen Isabella Causeway. Afterwards the word "Memorial" was added in honor of those who lost their lives when the bridge collapsed. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Commonly referred to as the jewel of highway engineering in the State of Texas, the Queen Isabella Causeway, at three or so miles, is the longest bridge in the Lone Star State, which stretches completely across the Laguna Madres, connecting South Padre Island with the mainland of the United States.
The causeway has been in operation since 1974 or so, and was named after Queen Isabella of Castile (Spain) who, upon becoming familiar of the explorer Christopher Columbus, financed his voyage to the “New World” in 1492. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home
