Plan to see a Texas Rangers game!!

by VeronicaG

What could be more fun on a pleasant night than a ball game? This was one of the first activities we took in after moving here!We purchased tickets to see the Texas Rangers play the Tampa Devil Rays. Rangers won 13-6 and it was an exciting game! Each time Texas hit a home run, fireworks lit up the skies above Ameriquest Field. The night was a comfortable 70 some degrees, the crowd was compatable, the colorful skies illuminated and the hot dogs had that unique ballpark taste--in a word, yummy!!Ameriquest Field opened in April,1994 and is part of a 270 acre complex. It is an open-air ballpark offering over 49,000 seats on five levels. The complex contains a 12 acre lake, baseball museum, a youth baseball park, recreation area and children's learning center, as well. Retail shops are located in an office building at the site. The playing field is of sod with the outfield an asymmetrical...

The Alamodome

by traveldave

The Alamodome was completed in 1993 to serve as a home for the National Basketball Association's San Antonio Spurs, as an incentive to lure a National Football League team to San Antonio, and to increase the city's convention capabilities. The San Antonio Spurs only played in the Alamodome until 2002, and a football team has yet to come to San Antonio. However, the stadium still hosts major concerts and other sporting events, such as arena football, soccer games, volleyball tournaments, rodeos, professional wrestling matches, NCAA basketball tournaments, and men's and women's Final Four basketball tournaments. The most prestigious sporting event that takes place at the Alamodome, however, is the Alamo Bowl college football game. The five-level Alamodome has a seating capacity of 65,000 but seating can be expanded to 72,000 for major events. It has 30,000 square feet (2,800 square meters)...

Hiking up Guadalope Peak

by Florida999

The over 4 mile hike ( one way) that gained about 3000 ft elevation to reach the summit of the highest mountain in Texas , Guadalope Peak was a spectacular hike, as far as views go. The weather was clear and you could see the Texas and New Mexico desert for miles in each direction. We enjoyed it despite the hot weather, but we started early and reached the top before the hottest part of the day. Take LOTS of water, put on lots of sunscreen, camera to take photos, good hiking shoes a must, the path is rocky at times.

Houston Astros

by DueSer

Yet another entry in my tour of the professional baseball stadiums...The Houston Astros used to play on the astroturf (named for them since they were the first to use it) under the Astro Dome. Altho the dome is still standing (last I checked), the 'Stros now play in what was called Enron Field when I attended a game but, is now called Minute Maid Park because nothing says Texas or baseball more than orange juice. Okay, so I'm not a fan of naming these stadiums for whichever company paid the highest amount of money but I will reluctantly admit that Minute Maid is much better than carrying the weight of a name like Enron, now synonymous with greed and corruption.1)Arrival & DepartureI was lucky because I went to the game with some friends who were locals and they drove (thanks, Carri!) so I didn't have to worry about finding a parking place in downtown Houston but I have to say that it...

Skeet Shooting

by ATXtraveler

One of the favorite pasttimes of Texans is to shoot at things. Especially when entertaining foreign travellers, one must show the proper techniques for skeet shooting. For those of you that are unfamiliar, skeet is a term used to describe a clay target, which is flung in the air by a metal launching contraption. The shooter assumes the position shown in the picture with his shotgun.... when he is ready, he will call out "PULL" to the person operating the launcher. A clay target is then hurled into the air, where the shooter is required to aim the weapon, discharge the shotgun, and pray the bullet hits the target. On this particular occassion, I was able to hit 3 of 8, which is far below my average. I have not shot in a while though! One shotgun, plenty of ammo, a clear and open field, a clay launcher (or someone with a REALLY strong arm), and strong liquor. Just kidding on the liquor...

Indoor rock climbing

by Velzy

Stone Works climbing gym! One of the BEST things I've found in this area! "North America's Tallest Indoor Climbing Gym!" These old silos are now my playground and hang out spot. The employees here are FANTASTIC! They will have you belaying in no time! They rent all the gear there or you can bring your own. They have a safety class to make sure you don't kill anyone LOL. They have runs for ALL levels of climbers! The "locals" there are happy to give you pointers if you get stuck at any spots too! The runs are changed every once in a while, so you will never Master them all! :) There are several runs outside too, which is VERY cool at night!!!! When you tire of the runs, the ENTIRE facility is set for bouldering! This is a GREAT way to learn techniques on those hard holds! Want to go upside down or hang by 1 finger?? Its all there!! Grand prairie

by keeweechic

Lone Star Park opened in 1997 in Grand Prairie and is thought to be one of North America's most successful new racing facilities. The Grandstand building of Lone Star Park is pretty impressive. There is a total seating capacity of around 8,000 seats which includes the paddock and apron area. The park was designed to be family oriented. There are terraced dining facilities in the Clubhouse and Jockey Club so as not to miss the racing events will eating. The glassed walls of the grandstand certainly provides amazing viewing as well as being in a climate controlled environment. Away from personal viewing there is also more than 600 television screens plus a giant infield screen.
