Kemah Boardwalk is about an hour from Houston (including traffic). It is a miniature version, however, so if you are expecting the works don't get that excited. However, for a day/night away from the city it's a great solution. There are rides for children (even a new roller coaster), fun restaurants, shopping, and all while listening to (and smelling) the gulf. Most of the restaurants have live music, too, on the weekends. Kemah also have a few hotels available if you want to make a weekend trip out of it!

I would definitely recommend it for a family trip!

I would also recommend looking at their calendar of events on the website while planning your trip to Houston because they often have celebrations (usually towards each holiday), concerts, and special occassions which you can have fun with. Most are centered towards kids but others focus on guys (Houston Texans, race car days, etc).

*When you first find your way there you will see some cheap parking prices. My advice would be to go directly to Kemah's parking. It is free and we have always been able to park there. Some people assume there aren't any paces and then end up paying $5-$10USD when they could have parked a whole lot closer and cheaper. Save that money for a pina colada! :)

The dike is a 6.5 mile paved rock groin extending into Galveston Bay. It is said to be the world's longest fishing pier. The dike along with the levee are open to the public and provide a lot of area for fishing or just a Sunday drive.

Schlotzsky’s is one of my very favorite places to eat. It’s a sandwich shop that you can take out or eat in the shop with plenty of tables always available. It’s a bit pricier ($6-7 for a sandwich) than most other sandwich shops but definitely worth it.

It's a place where you order at the counter, then wait for your food and pick it up when they call your number. It's very casual and I'm sure you'll love the food!

    Hours of operation
    Mon-Sun: 10am-10:00pm

Favorite Dish: The highlight is the sandwiches. They make it with thick sourdough bread and very thinly sliced meat. Then they sprinkle cheese (the best is a mixture of cheddar and mozzarella) on one piece of bread and run it through an oven conveyor belt. Therefore the sandwich is warm and very tasty. The Original is their signature sandwich and comes with: “Home of The Original® Sandwich. Lean smoked ham, Genoa and cotto salamis, and melted cheddar, mozzarella, and parmesan cheeses layered with black olives, red onion, lettuce, tomato, mustard and our signature dressing on toasted Sourdough bread.” (From the website.)

Their sandwiches are quite large. I’ve never ordered a large, the mediums are quite enough when you’re at your hungriest.

Their original chips are delicious! Their pizzas are as well. The cheese and pizza is definitely worth trying, also cooked on a sourdough. The bbq chicken looks just as good but it’s hard not to get my favorite sandwich, the turkey and cheese.

Whataburger is a fast food burger place that started in Corpus Christi. They have great burgers and offer chicken sandwiches and chicken fingers as well. They also have a great breakfast menu. Breakfast is served 11pm-11am.

    Best part? Open 24 hours!!!!!!

Favorite Dish: I get the whataburger with cheese, no onions (yuck!). The bacon cheeseburger is only good a portion of the time because the bacon isn't crispy enough.

Breakfast taquitos with cheese are great, as well.
