If You're Driving Near Grapevine...Stop By!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Grapevine, Texas is the oldest settlement in Tarrant County Texas. This historic town offers nine wineries which comprise a wine trail. Annual events like Main Street Days in May and Grapefest in September attract many visitors from the area. It is located a few miles north of Dallas.

The Gaylord Texan, a mega-resort which offers a unique stay with many amenities is located nearby. The Grapevine Opry has hosted guest performers such as Lee Ann Rimes and Charlie Walker on Saturdays throughout the year and features an in house band.

The Grapevine Vintage Railroad takes sightseers to Ft. Worth stockyards and back for a reasonable fee, while its Cotton Belt Depot is a visitor's center and museum for local lore.

Quaint buildings on main street have been refurbished and contain one of a kind shops and restaurants. The Grapevine Mills Discount Mall and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World have just about anything your heart desires. Stop by, you'll find alot to your liking here!

Grapevine is located in the PRAIRIES AND LAKES region of Texas. Please view my GRAPEVINE pages for more information.

    Visit COWTOWN, USA---Ft.Worth
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ft. Worth is a wonderful place to visit if you'd like a taste of the Old West. Its historic Stockyards District is a restored area along Exchange Avenue that boasts a daily cattle drive, tours of the old stockyards area, weekend rodeos, a vintage railroad, a Cowboy museum, restaurants and lots of souvenir shops. You can even pose for pictures on the back of a Longhorn Steer!

A guided walking tour through the area was both educational and fun. We ambled through the old stock pens, saw where the cowboys used to camp along the Marine Creek, witnessed a stock auction taking place via tv, were introduced to famous figures in Ft. Worth history such as rodeo star Bill Pickett and Commanche Indian, Quaana.

Billy Bob's Texas Honky Tonk is a stop worth making. Billy Bob's has concerts, bull riding on the weekends, line dancing, a small arcade area, gift shop, pool tables, a casino and hall of famous hand prints and snack area. Dolly Parton donated a rhinestone saddle that hangs over the dance floor and country singer Willy Nelson appears here frequently.

The Ft. Worth Zoo represents the animal kingdom well with gorillas, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, chimpanzees, zebras, ostriches, meerkats, lions, tigers and other creatures such as snakes, fish and reptiles. The shady walkways make your journey through the zoo a comfortable and pleasant one.

Fort Worth is located in the PRAIRIE AND LAKES region of Texas. For more on this personality packed town, see my FT. WORTH page.

    Wild Mustangs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mustangs at Las Colinas is a bronze sculpture by Robert Glen, that decorates Williams Square in Las Colinas in Irving, Texas. It is said to be the largest equestrian sculpture in the world.

The sculpture commemorates the wild mustangs that were historically important inhabitants of much of Texas. It portrays a group at life size, running through a watercourse, with fountains giving the effect of water splashed by the animals' hooves. The horses are intended to represent the drive, initiative and unfettered lifestyle that were fundamental to the state in its pioneer days.

I still love to go see this sculpture when I am in the area.

    Lovely San Antonio
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Paseo del Rio or River Walk - Texas
    The Paseo del Rio or
    River Walk

Southwest Airlines offered special pricing on flights to San Antonio, so we snapped up our tickets quickly. Our flight was less than an hour, so it was an easy trip from Dallas/Love Field. San Antonio is our nation's seventh largest city and was founded by Spanish missionaries and Canary Islanders.

San Antonio's claim to fame is The Alamo and its scenic River Walk. If you're interested in history, a self-tour of the Alamo is something that should not be missed. In total, there were five missions built in this South Texas town, beginning in 1718 (the Alamo being one of them).

A jaunt along the Paseo del Rio or River Walk beneath shady trees and cool waters is a perfect destination on a hot Texas afternoon. It extends for three miles and boatrides can be taken which course past colorful restaurants and shops. Also, the historic settlement of La Villita is within walking distance of the River Walk.

San Antonio is located in the SOUTH TEXAS PLAINS region of the state. Please take time to visit my SAN ANTONIO pages for a further glimpse.

    BIG Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of our favorite places to go in Texas is Port Aransas. It is reached by causeway on a 24 hr ferry or overland via Corpus Christi.
My hubby and I have been going there for years.
South of Port Aransas is Mustang Island State Park. You can fish, swim, collect shells, or watch the birds, like we do. There are 3,474 acres of sand dunes, sea oats and beach morning glories.
One year my daughter and her family came to my house and we drove down for a beach vacation. Fun was had by all. The kids loved feeding the seagulls. They didn't care much for the jelly fish.

    Palo Duro Canyon
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located outside of Amarillo. This is a Texas state park complete with RV sites, Tent sites, and even backcountry sites. We stayed one night in the backcountry, and it was all we could take. If you absolutely love the desert and the heat, this place is for you. There is a lot of hiking, and much plant and animal life around. We saw wild turkeys everywhere, and they will even run out in front of your car when you drive through!! Just be sure you bring lots of water, because the heat here can be horrendous.

    Don't miss the JFK route
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are traveling to Dallas, be sure to investigate the JFK history route. The Sixth Floor Museum, once the Texas Book Depository, covers the tragic assassination of John F. Kennedy in the 1960's. There are numerous photos, actual film clips of his entourage, news segments and interviews with those who experienced this sad event first hand. The museum is located in historic West End.

Dealey Plaza, the grassy knoll and other important sites are located in this same area. When we visited, an actual "X" marked the spot of the assassination. These related sites make for an excellent history lesson.

Grayson County Airport (Formerly Perrin AFB)
  • Tip Rating:
  • This small airport used to be called Perrin AFB back during WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. It closed in 1974, but many of the old buildings remain and can be explored. Be careful if you go because the buildings are very old, and contain asbestos. There is a free onsite museum, but it is very small. The old guys there used to serve at Perrin, and they can tell you stories and where everything used to be.

For a more in-depth look at Perrin AFB, check out my travelogues.

    Yellow Rose Drugstore
  • Tip Rating:
  • By far, one of my most favorite places. This is an old drugstore, with it's ORIGINAL (from what I have been told), soda fountain service. In addition, it is an anique store, complete with practically everything you can possibly think of. The people are friendly and the service is great.

    Dwight D. Eisenhower Birthplace
  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1890, the 33rd President of the United States was born here in Denison, Texas. His father worked on the railroad, and part of the original railroad is preserved and left in front of the house. The people here are very laid back, and will be more than happy to take you on a tour. The gift shop has actual authentic campaign souveniers (buttons, etc.) for sale for about $5.00 a piece. If you want to own a piece of history, here is the place.
