Dallas

by keeweechic

Dallas began its life from humble beginnings in 1840 as a trading post along the Trinity River and has now grown into a cosmopolitan city of high tech banking and insurance and third largest fashion centre and film production area in the nation. The city itself is an architectural wonder of old and new. Reunion Tower gives a great view over the city and for miles around. Of course Dallas is associated with the assassination of J.F. Kenney and memorials to him are within the city centre. The Westend is a lively place for dining and nightclubs. City Park recreates village life in the 1800's and of course there are many galleries, museums and theatres to enjoy. Then of course we musn't forget J.R. and Southfork Ranch.

White Rock

by keeweechic

White Rock is a small suburb of Dallas County 10 miles north of downtown Dallas. Today it is the largest public recreation area in Dallas attracting joggers, cyclists, boaters, fishermen and families all year round. White Rock Park covers an area of 2,115 acres, 1,077 acres if that is lake surface. It was been described in its early days as the 'soft soul of the city'. White Rock Lake is the centrepiece of the park. It is a manmade reservoir which was created in 1911 when White Rock Creek was dammed. The Dallas Arboretum is laid out on 66 acres overlooking White Rock Lake. The Arboretum is made up of 66 superbly landscaped acres of towering trees and fragrant gardens which circle lush lawns. There's something to see year 'round, from the gorgeous blooms of springtime to the vivid colours of fall.

Tip Photo
Mesquite

by keeweechic

Mesquite is a city in Dallas county known mostly for The Mesquite Championship Rodeo which was established in 1958 as an experiment in ongoing rodeo. It has gone on to become a world class attraction. With 250,000 attendances annually to live performances, television coverage has expanded world wide and now attracts one hundred million viewers per year. There are a couple of historical homes to visit and many lakes and parks. Devils Bowl Speedway runs from November through to March on Friday and Saturday nights.

Tip Photo
Waco

by keeweechic

Waco is one of Texas' major cities and lies in a rich agricultural region of the Brazos river valley. The Texas Rangers Museum and Hall of Fame is built near the site of the original Texas Ranger fort. You can also learn about the days of the Chisholm Trail which went through Waco enroute to the North. Baylor University right in the city is the largest Baptist University in the world. The Armstrong Browning Library is a great little place to visit. has the worlds largest collection of works and memorabilia of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Dr Pepper's Museum is also here. Unfortunately Waco is also remembered for the Davidian tragedy that ended in April 19, 1993 with alleged suicides and killings.

Tip Photo
Corsicana

by keeweechic

Corsicana is located in Navarro County in northeast central Texas, about 1 hour south of Dallas. Navarro County is recognised for the longest continuous oil flow in Texas with over 200 million barrels produced since 1895. The city's historic downtown area has numerous ornate buildings of the era and many lovely Victorian homes lining brick paved streets. There is a Pioneer Village, the Warehouse of Living Arts Centre, a temple as well as a Collins Street Bakery and other attractions.

Tip Photo
Austin

by keeweechic

Austin is the capital of the state of Texas and is a beautiful city surrounded by hills, valleys and lakes which run through the city - although to me they look more like rivers. a million people live in the city renamed to honour Stephen F. Austin, known as the "Father of Texas." for bringing in thousands of families into Texas (which was then under Mexican rule). In the early 1970's a combination of country music, blues, rock and roll, jazz and folk (amongst others) evolved to become the very distinct sound of Austin. Today more than 100 live music venues offer evening performances making Austin the 'Live Music Capital of the World'. Tour the Capital Building or the new Texas Museum or just sample the night life.

Tip Photo
San Marcos

by keeweechic

San Marcos lies in Hays County at the edge of the Hill Country. Studies have proven San Marcos to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in North America. There is evidence of Native Americans living along the riverbanks from as far back as 12,000 years ago. The town has gone from a gristmill, sawmill and cotton farming town to quite a modern little city. The clear cold River evolves from mammoth springs within the town and is ranked among the world's most fertile with over 100 species of underwater plants and species of aquatic life. Southwest Texas State University (SWT is recognised as one of the top 3 public universities in Texas, is here also.

Tip Photo
New Braunfels

by keeweechic

New Braunfels is in Comal County in Central Texas. You can find the town 170 miles NW of Houston, 240 miles SW of Dallas, 40 miles north of San Antonio and 45 miles south of Austin. New Braunfels is a little bit of old Germany right in the middle of the Texas Hill Country. Other than being known for its sausages and breads as well as being able at bier gartens and dance to oompah music, it is also a very popular river resort for all kinds of activities like tubing, rafting, swimming and fishing on the Guadeloupe River.

Tip Photo
Canyon Lake

by keeweechic

Canyon Lake is located in Comal County approximately 12 miles northeast of New Braunfels and 20 miles North of San Antonio. The lake was formed from the Guadalupe River when Canyon Dam was completed in 1964. Canyon Lake is one of the deepest lakes in Texas with an average depth of 43' and a maximum depth of 130'. Because of the clarity of the water, it is a popular destination for divers as well as providing all forms of water recreation. The lake’s scenic views are of the rugged hills of the Texas Hill Country and the narrow valleys with high limestone canyons which have been carved away over many years by the Guadelupe river.

Tip Photo
San Antonio

by keeweechic

San Antonio's is the eighth largest city in the U.S. and the third biggest in Texas. Located in south central Texas at the edge of the Texas Hill Country and the Gulf Coastal plains. The famed River Walk, Tower of the Americas, the Mercado Mexican-style marketplace, theme parks, art museums are well supported. Of course most famous is the Alamo and at 280 years old it has become synonymous with San Antonio and all things Texan. San Antonio certainly lives up to its reputation as one of the top tourist destination in the country.
