by nomorewars A couple of years ago, during one of my mother’s visits to my humble abode, I brought my nephew – a kid completely enamored with all things military-related – to the location of the Battleship Texas State Historic Site, in LaPorte, directly adjacent to the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. The ship is permanently anchored in the Buffalo Bayou, a contributory to the Houston Ship Channel, and is maintained by the Texas Park and Wildlife Department. Prior to traveling to Texas, my nephew had done a lot of independent research on all things pertaining to the U.S. military in Texas; he became aware of the battleship’s existence, pleading with me to take him to the ship over the telephone. I informed him that I would, a promise which spawned a great deal of anxiousness and excitement within him. The Battleship Texas is the last of the U.S. battleships, produced from the same mold as the HMS Dreadnought, that took part in both World War (WW) I and II. The boat was launched from Newport News, Virginia on May 18, 1912.
This historic site attracts thousands of visitors every year; and in the summer, there are usually long lines for the ferry – which you have to use in order to cross the Houston Ship Channel. The ride is short but quite popular with kids and adults who have never been on a boat before.
Children and military enthusiasts seem to really appreciate this site and, in the long run, they’re the ones who benefit the most from this historic site. If you are neither, then I would suggest taking the drive east along Interstate 10, to the town of Anahuac, and hiking through the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge: there are numerous species of animals to be seen. by darthmilmo Well, for the exception of the cities, the State is definitly free of them. However, don't underestimate the cities for they hold several interesting activities worth a stop. Leave a Comment

by Kodi01 This mustang horse sculpture is not far from the airport in a city called Las Calinas. You can see a movie how they were made and imported from Europe to the United States. Leave a Comment

The guided tour at the Alamo in San Antonio. This is a historical building and any interested in US, Mexican or Texan history should visit here, but DO NOT TAKE THE GUIDED TOUR. This was the most boring tour I have ever been on. Leave a Comment

anything within walking distance of the Grassy Knoll, almost everything that looks slick, is. The going rate for even a really good hamburger with avacados and everything is about $6.00 if they are charging more then they suck... P.S. drinks tend to be on the expensive side, beer can run you up to $4.00 a bottle mixed drinks tend to be more, bartenders expect to be tipped at every round... Leave a Comment

Any tour with the term Rodeo in it is BS. The only real Rodeos are in Feb-Mar and are held in DFW, Houston and San Antonio. Leave a Comment

Dallas and Houston are not relaxing places. Prices high, crowded, bad traffic. They have points of interest, but if I weren't going with a certain thing in mind to visit, I wouldn't go at all. The rest of Texas is roomier and friendlier. But Dallas and Houston are more high-energy 'party' towns if you like that sort of thing.

Dallas proper While someparts of downtown are nice most of dallas is rundown. The other surrounding cities have all the fun stuff with less traffic and cleaner facillities. Leave a Comment
