Blue Star Memorial Highway - Tyler

    Blue Star Memorial Highway

Favorite thing: The National Garden Clubs, Inc. have had a program in place to honor service men and women since 1945. It's the Blue Star Memorial Program, and it began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. The following year the National Council of State Garden Clubs, as it was called at the time, adopted the program and began a Blue Star Highway system, which covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. A large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was placed at appropriate locations along the way.

Tyler has a portion of this highway on Highway 271, near the Camp Fannin Memorial.

    Camp Ford Texas Historical Marker

    Camp Ford Historical Marker

Favorite thing: During a recent trip to Tyler, I stopped in to the Camp Ford Monument, where I was able to see this historical marker.

Camp Ford was originally a training camp for Confederate Soldiers, who turned this into a Prisoner of War camp after victories in Louisiana and Arkansas. It was effective since it was so far away from Union lines.

For more information, visit the Camp Ford website.

    Anothe Grand Old Lady!

Favorite thing: Tyler has some beautiful Historical Buildings, a must see if you are in the area.
Spring time must be an incredible time to visit this city, and also the Fall Rose Festival, which is on in October.
The Tyler State Park, any time of the year.

Fondest memory: It was a pleasant couple of hours, just driving around seeing the sites. We had a light meal and cappucino in a lovely cafe, before the long drive back.

A wedding that should have been a movie

Good thing mom was a big ol' woman

Favorite thing: If you have never attended a true Southern Wedding go rent the movie "Steel Magnolias". My brother's wedding was like that right down to the family bickerings and wedding planning disasters.

We called it a "Jerry Springer" wedding. There were relatives that crawled out of the woodwork. There were prodigal children returning, detested ex-wives and ex-husbands, alcoholics in the beer and wine, cheap wine, drunks, gossiping, fashion disasters, horrified memebers of the family when the one gay person came with his date, a token black, and mosquitos. It won't ever leave my memory.

Fondest memory: This photo is my dad and I in Tuxedos. It was the first time he ever wore one.
