George's Restaurant: Home of the Big O!

by ATXtraveler Written Apr 29, 2004

George's... Home of the Big O!

George's has been a local gathering place for Wacoans, Baylor Alumni, and Sports goers alike since the 1930's. GEORGE'S is known for its friendly atmosphere, and as a place "where everybody knows your (NAME) beer."
Sammy Citrano has mad an atmosphere in Waco where locals, students, and travelers can enjoy great food, great friends, and ice cold beer.
Also, there is a cook there named Emory who makes some mean meals... so make sure to ask for him!

Favorite Dish: Well, seeing as I have been in George's over 100 times in my college career, I would have to recommend two dishes above all of them:

#1 Emory's Cheeseburger Basket.... its a little spicier than the cheeseburger on the menu, so make sure you ask for it!

    #2 Chicken Fried Steak...

Please also remember... you must drink a Big O, and ask them to put Pat Green on the jukebox while you are there.

Ninfa's Mexican Restaurant: Tell Mama you need some Tex-Mex!

by ATXtraveler Written Apr 29, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Ninfa's Waco

Mama Ninfa has made Tex-Mex a statewide tradition with her chain of restaurants. Being the Texas traveler, I have been in several of her locations, including the one less than 5 miles from my home in Pflugerville. The Waco location, in my opinion is her best yet! It offers a nice bar area to sit (which you will have to do on busy nights). You will also see alot of the college crowd filing in, as they make their rounds in the Franklin Square.

Favorite Dish: I would recommend a Blue Margarita, the Nacho appetizers, and the Fajitas ala Barry. These are normal chicken, steak or shrimp fajitas, but there is also a wine sauce, mushrooms, onions and peppers covering the top of it. Worth every bite!

Buzzard Billy's: Are you so hungry Buzzards are circling?

by ATXtraveler Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Waco, TX is home to the first Buzzard Billy's. It opened January 21, 1993. This restaurant is credited for starting the downtown revitalization along the Brazos River corridor. Located across the street from the Hilton Hotel and Waco Convention center, the restaurant and bar is adjacent to the Historic Suspension Bridge where the Chisholm Trail crossed the river in the late 1800’s.

Favorite Dish: I highly recommend the Cajun Crawfish Pasta! It has a very delicious sauce to go with fresh crawfish... a spicy alfredo.

    Damon's: A Place for Ribs

by ATXtraveler Updated Apr 4, 2011

    Damon's

Although my review of the Waco Hilton was less than stellar, I would admit that the best thing about the hotel is the restaurant that is attached to it. I really liked Damon's as a place to eat, not necessarily because the food is good, but because it has three very large screen TVs which you can watch your favorite sports. This makes it an ideal place to watch your favorite team, drink a beer, and eat some of their famous ribs.

The onion brick is also one of my favorite dishes, however there is enough fat contact in that brick to make up your calorie count for the next three days!

    Slo-Poke's BBQ: "Slo" Service Expected!

by ATXtraveler Written Feb 21, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Slo-Poke BBQ

The building that now houses Slo-Poke's BBQ has gone through more changes than a pair of underwear, but the formula for a winning restaurant may have finally come true here in Waco. This is not your typical BBQ restaurant, but in a college town, anytime you add "All-You-Can" to the menu, you are assured to get plenty of people to come eat.

Slo-Poke's has moved to a fixed price $8.99 menu where you can order up to three choices of meat, and they will return with as much as you care to eat until you are finished!

Favorite Dish: Sausage was good, brisket was ok, and the turkey was delicious.

Elite Circle Grille: In the Center of Things

by VeronicaG Updated Aug 9, 2008

    Elite Circle Grille
    2 more images

The Elite Circle Grille is one of ten top restaurants in Waco. It came by its name naturally since it is situated along a traffic circle, which makes it easy to find!

The big attraction for us was that Elvis ate here in his army days. Needless to say, there were numerous photos of the KING throughout the restaurant and a room is even dedicated to him (pic #3).

I ordered the Fish and Chips--it was delicious ($9.95) and served with homemade fries that were absolutely the best! I liked how the booths were set facing out towards the aisle (pic #2). The grille definitely has a feel of the 50's era.

Our waiter was attentive at first, but seemed to disappear at the end of our meal. Nevertheless, he was courteous and friendly. I'm sure we'd return again to enjoy lunch here.

Health Camp: For Burgers and Dogs

by VeronicaG Updated Aug 9, 2008

    Health Camp

If you like the appeal of a diner with it's no-nonsense meals, you'll enjoy Health Club. It's located next to the Elite Circle Grill and yes, it's on the traffic circle, as well.

In preparing for our day in Waco, I found Health Club mentioned in several restaurant recommendations. It's another local choice for casual dining--hamburgers, chili dogs and hot dogs are the specialty of the house.

Although we didn't eat here on this visit, I think it just might be on our list the next go-around. Sometimes simple dining is the best, especially where kids are concerned!

    Gratziano's: Italian in Waco

by VeronicaG Updated Aug 9, 2008

    Gratziano's
    1 more image

Another of Waco's favorites is Gratziano's, an Italian restaurant designed in a loft/warehouse style. Soaring ceiling, oversized posters decorating its walls and a trendy contemporary look to its interior made dinner here special.

We began our meal with bruchetta ($4.99) a crisp and tasty appetizer. I ordered the Chicken Alfredo ($9.99) that was oh-so-good, creamy with large chunks of chicken. Jim decided upon the Tilapia Gratziano ($l2.99) which suited him fine. Our grandson zeroed in on a cheese pizza--a teenager's best choice (7 " for $9.99)! Warm, crunchy rolls accompanied our entrees. We all agreed that our meal was great.

Our waitress was very talkative and told us a little about her experience attending Baylor U. We enjoyed her bubbly personality and prompt service! We highly recommend Gratziano's!

    A1 Buffet

Part of the reason I stopped in Waco was to see James and his family. James was the son of an old army buddy of mine. I used to carry him on my shoulders (not gonna try that now) looking around Frankfurt, Germany. Now he was grown with three kids of his own. We had lunch together and he suggested this Chinese buffet. The food wa good and they had a decent selection. This was a good place for the kids (10 to 17) because they could all find something they liked. Not a bad price either. Good choice if looking for a buffet in Waco!

Taqueria El Mexicano Grille #8: Decent Mexican Grill

    Taqueria El Mexicano Grille #8

There are a number of these, and other places to get Mexican food, all over Waco. This one did not appear that great from the outside but was a bit better on the inside. The menu had a decent variety of items, and the service staff was pretty good. My waitress was cute; but her English was a bit limited (but better than my Spanish). Overall not a bad experience. Convenient to the interstate.

Favorite Dish: I enjoyed my cheese enchiladas. The salsa had quite a kick ;-)

  • Burrito King: Burrito King

by Spamhooligan Written Aug 26, 2002

One of the best authentic Mexican food restaurants known to man. Period.

Favorite Dish: Order the burrito...never in your life will you get a bigger burrio for under 3 bucks - it's literally as big as 1 1/2 soup cans, and i'm talking the big cans, not the Campbell's size cans. Also go for the real Mexican icecream bars in the case. The banana's just like eating a real banana. It's cool.

    Both had a great atmosphere

Favorite Dish: Barris III - Calzone
    Pappa Rollos - Anything pizza.
