  • Stop at the Welcome Center

Waskom is located on the Eastern edge of Texas along Interstate 20. There is a nice Welcome Center there where you can get some coffee, free Texas maps, lots of brochures of attractions throughout Texas and some friendly advice about how to make your stay better.

  • Birdwatching

Waskom is located very close to several lakes, which makes it an ideal location for birdwatching. At our house, we have several bird houses built for Purple Martins, which eat mosquitoes. We also have a nice bay window which overlooks some goldfinch feeders, loaded with thistle, so we are able to see a large variety of small birds.

Waskom Restaurants

  • BBQ and Catfish

There are two restaurants in Waskom that serve catfish, but I prefer Jim's. Jim's is superior in my opinion because it also serves BBQ, which means if there are people with you that do not like catfish, they will still find something on the menu worth eating. My son, ATXtraveler prefers the fried chicken here, but I go with the grilled catfish...

Waskom is a very sleepy bedroom community. If you are looking for night life, I would recommend looking elsewhere. I would say a good number of residents are in their home by 7pm, and many including myself are asleep by 9pm!

Waskom Warnings and Dangers

  • Mail Order Brides!

Be careful when you order something from a store in Waskom. When they get ahold of your mailing address, you never know who they will sell the address to! In this case, I ended up with a mail order bride from Waskom!!!!

  • Waskom cops on I-20!

I'm afraid Waskom cops like to give tickets on the interstate, so if you're coming from Louisiana, slow down right as you cross the border in to Texas... if coming from the west, slow down as you see the first exit for Waskom!

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: In the winter time, it can get quite cold in Waskom, so make sure you bring the appropriate amount of clothing. I prefer a nice warm down jacket from about November through to March. Quite often, you will see snow in March! Also, bear in mind that there are a lot of pine trees in this area, which means will keep the temperature down.

Favorite thing: We have found a wonderful church home at First Baptist Church Waskom. The pastor, Leland Crawford is an excellent speaker, and his message is reaching hundreds of people every week. We are overjoyed with the fact that we have found this wonderful place to meet others.
