A home along the historic route

There are signs in town the point to a historic driving route. The roads will lead to a couple of nice residential areas with some old homes. The Queen Anne, Second Empire, Greek Revival, and other styles will become evident. This is a good look at a past era where each home was unique and great care was taken to make them last.

    Parker County Courthouse

    Parker County Courthouse

Texas is known for its great courthouses, and they come in a variety of architectural styles. The best ones in the state were built just before and after the turn of the 19th century. The Parker County Courthouse is one of the most beautiful in the state, and it has been recently restored. It was built in 1886 in the Second Empire style. This particular design is inspired by French architecture. There are four clockfaces on the tower. The courthouse itself marks the center of the county, and it dominates the historic center of Weatherford. There is plenty of parking in the immediate area (at least on a Saturday). There are some historic markers on the grounds worth reading that explain a little bit about Weatherford, Parker County, and the courthouse itself. The stone on the building is native to the county.

Games of Skill at the Festival

    Shootin' those prairie dogs--on screen

The Army was represented at the Peach Festival and offered this game of skill, which involved shooting as many prairie dogs as possible in order to rack up points.

Quite a few youngsters wanted to see how they would fare at this game, so the line was rather slow. According to our grandson, it was worth the wait, though.

A small tent provided shade from the scorching sun. I eased myself beneath the tent and snapped this picture--look at the concentration exhibited. Hee,hee!

    Rock Climbing at the "Festival"

Our grandson, scaling the rock climbing wall

Once we were delivered to the town square via shuttle bus, our grandson glimpsed this rock climbing tower and was eager to get to the top.

Alot of kids wanted to join in on this activity. It was a hot, hot day and the line moved slowly. Nearby, there were bounce houses, slides, a swing ride and other amusements for children.

I especially appreciated the sample packets of sunblock and paper fans given out to make the afternoon more comfortable for us festival goers!

    Shaping Up at the Festival

    35 Push ups

The Marines had a presence at the festival, also. Their booth encouraged those up to the challenge to see how many push ups or pull ups they were capable of doing.

A t-shirt with Marine logo was the reward for doing 45 pull ups (age 18 and up); a Marine poster was given for doing 35 push ups(all ages).

Our grandson is shown in the midst of his push ups, receiving a poster afterwards for his accomplishment.
