    Moab Brewery: drink locally

    not the best pretzels but not a bad Belgian Wit

    The Moab Brewery is a decent enough place to escape the midday sun, grab a bite to eat and of course wash it all down with a few house brewed beers. Is the beer world class? No. Is the food something to really write home about? No. Does the A/C kick butt? Yes. Oh, and it's wireless for those looking to check their e-mail.

    First things first. It is a big bustling sports bar. It is ice cold, something you learn to appreciate when out camping in the desert for weeks on end. It sure looks promising. The trouble is not really the beer which is fair enough especially at their happy hour prices; it's the food that's really not up to par. We were also a bit in a rush as we'd go in the afternoon but have to rush back to the park to get into position for the early evening light making all that red rock glow. Hey, I like my beer but it would take a whole lot better beer than this to pry me away from Arches at sunset.

    We arrived after quite a few weeks of eating campground food, a lot of pasta and not much meat. We were dying for a good burger. So, we opted for two Swiss mushroom burgers which at $7.69 is good value as they came with a fairly generous portion of fries. It wasn't a bad burger, it was just not the great one we were looking for. It was a pre-formed patty and the fries weren't exactly fresh cut either.

    Favorite Dish: The beers certainly helped things along. They sell pints on Tuesdays & Thursdays for $2.50 and are quite good about giving you free samples of their ample selection. We started with the Dead Horse Ale which had a nice mix of malt and hops making for a balanced session beer with a clean finish. Their seasonal was a Belgian Wit, a classic honey-hued unfiltered wheat beer with a citrusy nose and fruity palate. It was a good example of the style down to the coriander spicy notes and a perfect beer for this climate. We finished up with the Black Raven Stout which was served via a nitro tap making for a creamy Guinness type texture. The deep mahogany beer was a bit light, more of a porter but did exhibit a fairly roasty palate and bitter finish.

    Our second visit, we decided to just have a snack and ordered their brewmaster's soft pretzels with a cheese sauce. We'd had this at a few brewpubs and generally fairly safe to cleanse your palate between beers if you're not looking for a full meal. These were frozen pretzels re-heated it seems in the microwave and just about the worst soft pretzels we'd ever had. We tried the Elephant Hill Hefeweizen which while unfiltered and yeasty, did not approximate a Bavarian Hefeweizen in any way. It's more of an American Wheat beer with a lightly hoppy palate. The Park City Steamer had a big creamy head and malty aroma. The amber beer modeled after Anchor Steam lacked the prototype's fruity palate but it was well balanced with a bitter dry finish. The Park City Pilsner was not in the Czech mold but more an American light pils. Better than Bud but that's not saying much. The Scorpion Pale Ale was a floral hop affair that could have used more malt to balance out what started out interestingly enough but finished a bit one-sided.

    Devil's Kitchen: save gas by eating at home

    We ate most of our meals at the Devil's Garden Campground in Arches National Park. It's located at the end of the park's Scenic Drive so 18 miles from the entrance and about 30 from the Moab Brewery. As you can see, it doesn't make much sense to go to town for dinner. This is especially true since the campground is about as scenic and atmospheric as it can get. You are dining right amongst the fins that you came to see in the first place. Our spot had a great long brick constructed preparation area which made making meals a cinch . Though our spot had lots of shady areas, it was just not possible to get the picnic table in the shade so we improvised with our backcountry tarp!

    Favorite Dish: Pancake breakfasts after a morning of hiking or a photo shoot went down well. For dinner, we ate a lot of pasta but also had cheese and whatever bread we could dig up at the local supermarket to go with our evening beers. We bought a six-pack of Derailer Ale from the Moab Brewery. It is said to be brewed with six different malts and four different hops. It was an easy drinking smooth balanced brew with a malty aroma (hey, six malts!) with a clean bittersweet finish. It was a nice addition to the campground!

    Moab Brewery: A relaxed atmosphere

    Down on main street in Moab, this is a wonderful little place to eat at. We were there on a Saturday afternoon and were seated promptly. As one would expect from a Brewery, the atmosphere is loud and fun, as people are enjoying their food, drink, and sports on the TVs. The service is top notch. We had burritos, which were huge and very reasonably priced in the $7-8 range. Neither I or my wife could finish our meal. Be sure to sample one of the beers they brew on site as well.

    Favorite Dish: The burrito I had was loaded with meat, cheese, and veggies. It was fantastic.

    At Moab, against the cliffs,...

    At Moab, against the cliffs, one can have deliscious dinner in style and look all over the town. The restaurant is caled Mi Vida. The hanging house in which the restaurant is situated, was founded by the lucky man that - in his search for gold - accidently struck the largest uranium deposits in the U.S. At first not that valuable, but now-a-days it has quite it's value.

    Favorite Dish: Exquisit Ceasar's Salad.

    Miquel's Baja Grill: Enjoy Fresh Mex

    This restaurant is quite small (by US standards) so it can get full. The food is all made from fresh ingrediants and it shows. The food was great. The decour was bright and colourful. If you can get a table you will not be disappointed.

    Favorite Dish: Fajitas made with fresh produce and washed down with some Negra Modelo beer.

    Ok this is a supermarket and not a restaurant but i thought i'd share anyways. We went to the city market twice and found it to be both a great way to save some cash and a great place to buy some food. There was a make-your-own salad bar and the prices were not bad at all.

    There are no options for food inside Arches National Park; but there are plenty of choices in the nearby town of Moab. I ate at a nice restaurant called the Slickrock Cafe in Moab. This place has a classy atmosphere and fancy food that is very well presented. The waitstaff was well dressed and professional. If you want a really nice place to dine and will pay a tiny bit more than average, try it!

    Favorite Dish: I had the "Jug Handle Arch" which is Tilapia in a very good Chipotle Sauce served with rice.
