Escalante is looking like a...
Favorite thing: Escalante is looking like a modern version of a pioneer town. It has a agricultural, starting atmosphere and visitors are welcomed warmly. The society has created a nice and happy village in a very natural and green setting. A little barrage-damm, with behind it a artificial lake takes care of irrigationwater, some recreational fishing and - I think - enough electricity to serve the towns needs. Yes, they still exist! and how happy it made me.
Fondest memory: The hazelnut-coffee is something that until now hasn't been surpassed in quality.
Hike to Lower Calf Creek...
Favorite thing: Hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls. To get there drive to the BLM campground which is about 15 miles east of the town of Escalante on Hwy 12. The 5.5 mile return hike is fairly easy and you get to cool off in a small pool below the falls. Photo: On the Calf Creek trail anticipating that dip in the water, July '99.

Favorite thing: Drive Highway 12 and/or 89 through the monument. The scenery is breathtaking in all directions. Photo: A view from just off Hwy 12 into the Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument. This spot is on a very scenic 32 mile drive between Boulder and Torrey where the road follows a knife edged ridge with great views all-around. If you're driving though, keep your eyes on the road - it's quite a drop.
worldtrekker's General Tip
Fondest memory: After taking the 2.75 mile hike in the heat, seeing this beautiful, 126 foot high waterfall and taking a dip (a very quick one as it was COLD!) Great spot! Photo: Lower Calf Creek Falls, July '99.
