Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Things to Do

  • Lake Powell Canyons - The Cathedral in...

An amazing location that is truly a wonder in Lake Powell. It is found near the end of Clear Creek Canyon. The Cathedral in the Desert is a narrow slot-like canyon leading to a lush grotto. Depending on the lake level it is accessible by smaller boats or PWC's. We navigated the canyon in 24' Maxum and squeeked through the narrow passages to find a...

Renting boats at Lake Powell is a great way to explore it's beauty and play in the water. If you don't own a boat, renting is a great option - and you don't have the cost of upkeep! If you're renting near the Bullfrog Marina area you have 2 options, Aramark Corporation or Offshore Marina. Aramark rents boats on the lake from Bullfrog Marina -...

  • Somewhere Under the Rainbow

Rainbow Bridge... a natural wonder that is really a wonder. A short and easy hike from the boat tour of Lake Powell (the boat stops, gives you time to walk to see this, and then sails on)-- or a long and difficult hike from a road (13 miles)... this is worth the trip, however you get there.

At night, fishing is the best. We all gathered around the back of the boat to fish. My cousin caught 9 stripers in one night. Her father kept trying and even took her pole away and jumped in her spot....he caught nothing.

Dress Code: Shorts and a t-shirt....shoes are optional

Click on the map and check-out the bottom left hand corner for Page, Glen Canyon Dam, and Wahweap. Rainbow Bridge is near the coordinates J4. Navajo (the longest) and West Canyons are located on the south side of the lake between Wahweap and Rainbow Bridge. The 50 mile trip by water from Wahweap to Rainbow Bridge will take you about 2 hours each...

  • The best way to get around...

The best way to get around Lake Powell is a boat. You can rent a houseboat, but a reservation needs to be made at least a year in advance for some of the bigger houseboats. I know most of us do not know what we're doing next week much less next year, but believe me it's definitely worth it.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Warnings and Dangers

  • Summers here are hot! You...

Summers here are hot! You need to protect yourself by wearing a hat, cap, bandana, whatever. Also slop on that sunscreen. This is especially important if you're out boating with no shade all day. There aren't very many shady spots at any of the beaches, coves, etc. I was once on a trip with a French girl here who went out on a boat all day without...

  • Thunderstorms are common...

Thunderstorms are common during the summer months. They can also appear suddenly. If you are boating out on the lake seek shelter in a protected cove. You don't want to be in the middle of the lake during a storm. Also, the narrow canyons are a dangerous place to be during a storm as they are prone to flash flooding. This goes for on the lake and...

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Tourist Traps

Well it shouldn't be a tourist trap. But if you want to see a working dam from the inside don't go to Glenn Canyon Dam. Since 9-11 (september 11th 2001) all tours are suspended for security reasons. You can visit the gift shop and get some kind of a spoken tour but that's it.
It's a shame we've visited the Hoover dam before 9-11 and we would have like to see this one....maybe another vacation.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area What to Pack

  • Packing List

Loose fitting, light colored clothing for when you're out in the sun. Open sandals, tevas, etc and hiking boots if you plan any serious hiking in the canyons. During the peak months of summer it is usually warm enough to sleep outside or in your tent with your sleeping bag unzipped. There's lots of ants on the campground though, so you may not...

Pack light, you are on a boat. Try to collaberate with your traveling companions on things you can share. Shorts, t-shirts, swimsuits, hiking sandals (ones you won't mind getting wet), a hat, sunglasses. SUNBLOCK! You are in the middle of the lake with the hot Arizona sun beating down on you. I forgot to put sunblock on one day and I got a 2nd...

Not far from Lake Powell, there´s famous Antelope Canyon. You can usually visit it with a guided tour, it is not advised to go on your own since sudden rainfalls may fill this canyon rapidly with water. But uh-oh, what an experience.
