    Revisit payback

Conveniently-covered picnic tables stay put in the best spot so even the time used to recharge the batteries and refill the tank is not lost. While the "necks" are rather concise in terms of geography, the site is worth more than one visit in order to appreciate the variety of hues created in the different lighting of the day. Noon is good enough for a sublime picnic spot and some camaraderie development with similar transient folk, doing the same munching business but sunset moments are unforgettable spectacle with the whole spectrum of colours that the rocks possess in sharp contrast to the greyish uniformity of the midday decor. Moreover, the winds speed up as the sun goes down and are able to drown any leftover of bratty children’s dribble into the distance.

A wonderful view from the rim

You take a short drive from the main road, maybe 2 miles and when the road stops, you get out the car and look down at the San Juan River about 1,000 feet below. When we were there, in the middle of tourist season (end of July) we were the only car there except for the local Navajo selling jewelry.
You hear nothing here except your breathing. You can sit on the rim and just stare down at the river meandering below and enjoy the peace. If you want to go the road less traveled, this is a good stop.

    Goosenecks Gorgeous

Goosenecks State Park is a real gem. It's a beautiful deep canyon with an oxbox river bending through a steep gorge. It's like your own mini grand canyon! While less known than lots of the surrounding areas, it is nonetheless stunning and well worth a visit!

These sites of natural splendour are not so much in the books of the great National Parks in the South West United States, but ... if you - like me - are going to make a roundtrip along them, you will find a 'empty' gap between Monument Valley (AZ) and Arches N.P. (Moab). This route can be pleasantly filled up with the special places that I show you in this page. A way of making a long drive very scenic and beautiful.
