    Be prepared for the wilderness

by Toughluck Written Nov 19, 2009

Luggage and bags: No hotels, no lodges are in the monument. If you're going to camp, come prepared with as little as you need. Canyons are narrow. Plan to base camp and then explore with a small day pack carrying food, water, first aid, and/or rain gear.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Actually, go prepared for sunny and hot. It it rains! Stay out of the canyons. Did you hear that?? Flash floods can come down off the Henry Mountains and you've not seen a raindrop in days nor a cloud in the sky. Watch the horizons, read the weather reports before you go.

Good Hiking shoes/boots. Shorts and short sleeves work with sunscreen. Wear a hat.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Overnight in the monument? Take everything. A shovel is necessary to bury waste. Toilet paper, etch. Nearest medical help may be only 10 miles, but it's likely to be 1-2 hours away.

Photo Equipment: Great photographic opportunities. Any size camera will do. Cell phone cameras? only if it's descent and you have lots of room in you memory.

Luggage and bags: Look into one of the new mesh backpacks if planning a backcountry trip. We didn't do one but can imagine carrying a wet backpack (and all the extra weight) for miles wouldn't be much fun.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Sturdy boots are needed for the tricky terrain and to protect ankles but water sandals are handy for crossing wet patches in the slot canyons. Sun hat and sunglasses are essential. Long sleeves help protect you from the sun's harsh rays.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Sunscreen should be applied often.

Photo Equipment: A wide angle for atmospheric Wave shots and good zoom for wildlife. How close to a snake do you want to get? A tripod for canyon photography due to low light. I forgot mine BOTH times and regretted it.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: A tent is worth its weight in gold. Camping at White House is one joy in life you should not miss. Warm bags, it gets cold at night. A big water container is a must as there is no running water at the campgrounds.
